funny thing.
I actually touched and molested the insides of a real (a few years old though) f1 car last month. it was an ex mika hakinnen mclaren mercedes (the ones with the grooved tires).

i always imagined f1 tires to be rubbery-soft, almost silicone-like.... was actually quite surprised when I touched them, and noticed they felt plastic-ky, like if they were made from pvc, an inflatable pool-like quality almost... with mellow sidewalls and ridiculously stiff (and light) contact patch. quite counter-intuitive.

But that tire was designed to work at temperatures that probably would have burned your hand if you touched it. Considering the loads it has to handle it probably would never feel soft, but I am going to guess it would feel sticky like glue at operating temp.

Hmmm, I may have actually been there. First real job was a Service Engineer for Makino, they make pimpy high end CNC mills. Was on the road 50 weeks out of the year and went to hundreds of factories. Don't miss the travel. I do kind of miss the noise of a 5" shell mill spraying chips at a full 30HP power cut.

The size of the flame coming out the assend of the B1 never ceases to amaze me. Can almost get a sense of how loud they are too..
