We're kicking off the 2024 Secret Santa! Exchange gifts with other monkeys - from beer and snacks, to bike gear, to custom machined holiday decorations and tools by our more talented members, there's something for everyone.
Spiders rule, I had some monsters on my front porch this summer. I'd keep the floodlights on to attrack moths to the web. Spent hour drinking beer watching spiders eat. It's old school redneck entertainment. Them fancy rednecks get the bug zappers.
I have had this Chilean Rose Haired Tarantula for about 3 years now. Actually I bought it for a GF who hated spiders, but her mom took care of it anyway, so when I moved back to TN, i sort of got her back. They have a lifespan of 20+ years. Much good entertainment. She's super mellow and has only bitten one dude.

Actually you have to keep them in a smaller box becuse if they climb they can hurt themselves with only a small fall. Spider experts ive talked to say the setup I have is optimal. Its bigger than it looks tho.
Next year she will be full grown and ready for a mouse or a small lizard or something. Its just crickets and whatever bugs I catch here and there now, though.
They can kill and eat anything smaller than their body-size. Like, without the legts. Right now she's about the size of two quarters laying side by side in the body area. But legs get out to maybe 4 inches in diameter.
She has molted only twice in the last 3 years and I saw niether event. Though I have one of the exoskeletons saved somewhere. I dont know why. Its been quite a spell, so Im assuming she'll molt again sometime this winter. When she does, she grows alot though. it was a tiny thing when I got her. Maybe 2 dimes size. They get full grown at 4 to 5 years I guess.
If I give her a mouse next year, it will be just a little baby one. Id feel better off with a lizard or two first. She has only 7 legs. She lost one in a wierd water-bowl accident involving my GF last year, but she's totally recovered and doesnt even miss it at all.
For quick and amazing death lover, nothing better than a nice hungry Boa constrictor. My little baby used to own the mice like Gladiator in the arena
