Built it up last night. Rides freaking amazing! I'm thinking about getting a new rear shock, and saving the Romic for a back up. Any suggestions?? I'm considering an Avy. I was reading on the maintenance page on the Avy site, and it said the shock needs to have the nitrogen charge recharged every six months :dead: Can that be done at a moto shop, or send it in? I kind of want something that doesn't need a lot of attention. Here's the "new" ride...

I believe the Nitro can be refilled at a moto shop. That's what I had read somewhere, but may want do deus check that.
Edit: Kick arse bike, too.

From what I understand, it can be refilled at a Moto shop.

BTW I have a 5th Ele on my SLX, and I am jonesing for an Avy on that. After finally using one on my M1, I am in love. It just feels way better than any shock I have ever used, hands down.

Get an AVY!

that bike is badass. :thumb: well done.

As for the avy, I'm pretty sure any moto shop that can work on Showa (?) rear shocks can do full rebuilds on avalanche shocks. I would assume that includes nitrogren charging.

Anyway, again, nice ride!

If you are looking into getting a rear shock that doesn't need any attention, you might want to look into Manitou Swinger 4way, Progressive 5th Element, and Fox Vanilla RC. You could probably get a used or blown FOX Vanilla RC dirt cheap and send it to PUSH to get it fixed. :thumb:

For the Fox, you could send it to Push Industries to upgrade the internals. I've heard nothing but good stuff about PUSH. Here is their website: http://www.pushindustries.com/

Here are some forums about people commenting on the PUSH upgrade.

BTW, you've got one hot looking rig dude!

Ride on!

Thanks for the links, the shock hunt is on. I had a 5th E on my last bike and I'm not sure I really liked it so much. It could be the way I had it set up (who knows) it felt kind of dead, not very active and needed air almost every ride. The Romic thats on my bike feels good, a lot different from the 5th, I haven't had time to dial it in yet - but so far so good.

My Romic is 7.5x2.0 thanks for the offer, but I'll keep it as a back up.

I wouldn't ever be concerned about avalanche maintenance. IMHO, they're the most durable MTB shock made.

It doesn't "need" servicing every 6 months, but you'll get the best performance if you at least recharge the nitrogen ($5-10, 5 minute job at an MX shop.) If it does need rebuild/service or just an oil change, it can all be done locally with common motocross parts. Just be prepared for the MX shop to look at you funny when you tell them you ride a bicycle, and don't let them do any revalving.

You won't get [typically; there's nothing that's 100%] the same problems that can require maintenance on other shock brands...leaking seals and knobs, blown shocks, cavitation, etc. I may have heard one internet rumor of an Avalanche breaking (though it might partly be due to the fact that there just aren't many Avvys out there.) I imagine most other shock brands' manuals tell you to do an annual service, too...and that will usually require mailing it back to their tech support.

In any case, lots of people have ridden theirs for 2 years or more without ever taking it off the bike or doing ANY maintenance, so don't be scared.

I'm not a slave to avalanche...there are lighter shocks out there that perform really, really well and/or have more external adjustment...but their durability and reliability IS legendary, and is certainly their strongest selling point to me.

Likewise, I like my RFX. Yours looks pretty cool, too. Congrats.

MD

PS All this said, I *may* send my RFX's stock Vanilla RC to PUSH just to try it out and maybe shed some weight...
