...Republican National Committee Chairman Ed Gillespie told ABC. ``The fact is that this is the custom in these things. Presidents have made jokes about very serious matters at these dinners.

How does the old saying go, "Without a sense of humor, a man's got nothing."

It was a harmless joke.
I agree.

I'm about as anti-Bush as they come and I see no harm in this. It makes the Democrats look petty.

There are so many real issues to attack Bush on, why try and spin a roast/comedy comment into a issue?

Haha, the joke is on us. Bush got away with convincing America to go to war by feeding us a line about WMD's. It is funny and he knows it.

I will rarely get offended by a joke. And I'm not really offended by this. I just think it was a stupid thing to say.... But it will just blend in with the rest of the stupid things...
No doubt it was stupid. My laughing was a combination of laughing with Bush and laughing at Bush.

but why was it stupid?

Heck, us anti-Bushers in this thread have called or agree with the Dems looking petty. Also, he didn't offend the military cuz at the end of his speech, he praised them very well.

So really, it was just Dem silliness and media fodder.

In general I would think that joking about a war...that's still going on, where people (good guys and bad guys) are being killed, is tasteless. It's a little too soon, isn't it?

I find it similar to the "exploding space shuttle/washing up on the beach" jokes surfacing only a couple of days after the Challenger blew up. Yes when it comes down to it, it's a harmless joke. But it's still pretty crass. And for the president to do that, it just compounds it.

Whatever. I don't really care THAT much.

Did you find him using the 9/11 footage tasteless?

How come everytime someone gives Bush, the Republicans or the Dems crap, someone has to say "but the Reps/Dems did this...". Leaders being arseholes should not be justified because their political oppenents are also arseholes. IMO a true leader should hold himself at a higher standard.

there is no justification; i'm merely pointing out there's blame to go around.

although i certainly agree what a model leader should be like, i wouldn't hold my breath on that "above the fray" uber-politician. (not that you are, i'm just waxing pessimistic)
