nothing to stop you from using a hardtail to dh, it wont be comfy or easy and expect lots of punctures and trashed rims.
bikes like the DMR exalt and dialled bikes alpine are good for it, Norco also has some appropriate models. You'll want about 150mm travel upfront, some big fat tyres, a short stem and some good brakes to make a proper DH hardtail. Dirt writer Billy had a project making a hardtail to ride at the megavalanche so look that up for more tips
I use this for downhill now and again, it's pretty sweet. It has Pikes on now and I normally set 'em around 110-120mm any more is daft on a hardtail IMO as the geo changes get a bit wild!
Spec on this thing is perfect (again in my opinion), 721's are light and strong as are the saints (when I say light I just mean mega strong!) Tomson post also means I can get the seat up to proper pedaling height and do some XC!
