 After getting someone to assist with a booster, managed to get my sister's car to the Toyota dealership in Rutland, where they will diagnose the 12 V battery as dead and replace it. The amount of time and energy I have put into this approaches infinity.
That require one of Toyota's fancy technology enhanced batteries?

My dad had to replace the battery in his Highlander last year and Toyota wanted $400-500 for one of their lead acid batteries that has a logic controller built into it.

Thanks, I'll shift over to that instead of addressing them by their first name.

Don't wanna be one of those chumps that nicknames their colleagues "Brett" cause they cannot bother to respect a foreign name.
I worked with/for Japanese companies for about 15 years. Whenever possible I would indeed address them with the appropriate -san. Only a little effort and even if you fuck it up, I think the attempt at respect is worthwhile.

I did work with an extremely traditional Japanese company where such things were important enough that we had a special portal for electronic communications that would automatically format your message with the appropriate honorifics. In addition all emails were sent to the department head with the actual target individual being CC'd

Whatcu got for phone games?

I've either maxed or fully completed my current repertoire of idle time wasters to the point of boredom.

My enthusiasm for Wordle and the NYT Crossword has wained to zilch over the last year

I have reached the pinnacles of greatness with these two

it shows you are a gaijin. but no one would be offended
This is the answer. The Japanese expect a foreigner NOT to “get it right.”

Personally, I would (and do) address them as I would an American colleague. First name no “san” unless VP/c-level in which case “Mr. Last name.”

I went out on a limb, admitted to my colleague that I am unfamiliar with the -san etiquette and asked how they would prefer to be addressed.

No big deal to respect whatever their preference is. Happy to do it.

Ah, but honorifics are never asked for. They are just given unbidden. To ask to be addressed as Clark-san would be a faux pas in and of itself for me.

This is what I recall would be the more appropriate approach, albeit many years ago. Dad had been data management w/ Hartford Steam Boiler, the mid seventies to the mid nineties. Different times, maintaining open communication was, and is, priority one.

Speaking of which, I was invited, at 4pm, to run a 7pm meeting. Thanks for the heads up. :stosh:
Our Europe people refuse to join meetings if it's outside of their work hours.

No judgement, props to them.

But the way the expectation is different here on this continent make me want to punch someone.

Only if you include a hard core porn link which may get you a bonus. As a Jr exec i was given a list of interactive cds and toys to procure for the japanese head of our divisions visit. Just saying
Good thinking. Just ordered a dozen clone-a-bone kits so I can gift all of the Japanese branch managers a paper weight shaped like my balogna pony.
