There's plenty of time to pray to God voluntarily, but it doesn't belong in public schools. Are parents really afraid that their children will become Godless if they don't remind themselves every morning that the nation is "under God?" It's a parent's responsibility to bring religion to their children, not the government's. It was added unecessarily and it only serves to highlight and ostracize those that are in the minority.
I agree but still don't see why there can't be a compromise. Not every battle has to be decided 100% one way or the other. Both sides give a little then the problem is solved. However most people seem to wanna take a "my way is the only way" approach all the time.

Maybe it is time for a new pledge, without the "under God"...

Mmmmmm....How 'bout
"I pledge allegiance to the great range at Walmart and to the mall in which it stands, one credit card under crushing debt, insouciant, with cheap sandals and other useless crap for all". Needs some work I know. ;)

How about: "I pledge to try and behave in a way that is beneficial to society as a whole and the planet Earth as well as myself"?
