For those of you shipping your bike/bringing the bike on the plane with you, United is charging a flat rate of 175 dollars for domestic flights with non-frequent fliers. Don't get railed at the airport, plan ahead.

Luckily I checked in yesterday before my flight in a half hours, because I'd have been a very bummed out dude if I'd discovered that at the airport.

Is that one way? If so, wtf.....

Air Canada is still $50 each way for a bike box, last summer it was $0.00......

Someone needs to come out with a conversion kit to turn your Dh bike into a wheel chair...you would even get to board the plane first.

The kid just took United to Sol Vista and back, broke the bike into 2 boxes both under 50 lbs and 62". The first box was $20 and the second was $30. $50 is a lot cheaper than shipping for sure.

You can do the same on Southwest for $25.

Edit: he tried the wheelchair scam and the rep at the airline was not too happy for sure. I think they have wised up to that.

Also, the airlines are mothballing a lot of planes and many of those aircraft will not return to service so if the economy bottoms out later this summer and travel picks up going into 2010 airfares will be $$$$ big bucks next season. I'm considering booking my 2010 Whistler visit this summer so on that trip I'm going to pull the rear triangle and try the two baggage box strategy.

More on the baggage.....http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052970204563304574318212311819146.html

If anyone utilizes the two box method post some photos....
