Looking on the Ebay for a new road crank...see alot of compacts. Just what does this mean to Jamis Comet road bike? Do I/will I need to change anything else? Gearings the same as the Shimano 600 that has died on me...

It's just a different bolt pattern for the chainrings (110mm vs 130mm). If the crank comes with the size rings you need then you won't have to do anything other than a front der. adjustment. Typically you can get lower gears on compact, so not many "serious" racers use it except for cyclocross.
Instead of a 53t/49t it is a 50t/34t chainrings on the crankset.
