Yesterday Carlos (Joe Pozer) came over and we tried mounting a non UST maxxis tire on his Mavic UST rim. We used stans and my air compressor.

Well guess what...While trying to get the bead to seal, I had the tire blow off the rim right in my face - I thought I had lost my finger, right eye and ears!! holy crap!!! Stan's all over my face/garage and the rim literally flew to the back the garage while the tire flew outside. Even an hour after I was still dizzy.... My right eye still hurts...it got a powerful spray of Stan's when it blew...god it scared the livin' sh|t out of me!! I'm surprised the neighbors didn't call 911 from the noise it echoed through the neighborhood!!

Needless to say I didn't feel like trying to mount it again after that...

Reminds me of when I tried filling up a tire using the gas station compressor (this was 10 years ago) and the tire blew off the rim, tore the tube in half and blew the rim crooked. All I heard was a a loud boom and then the echo of the boom moving away from me...my ears were ringing for a few hours.

That happened to my friend Bill also. Don't forget the American Way™ - you, Bill, and others could get together and make a class action suit against Stan - should have given you warnings in the instruction to use eye and ear protection :p

You are a lucky man, my neighbor was also using an air compressor when the tire 'exploded'. A piece of the tire cut al the nerves on the left side of her face, her left cheek was almost completely gone and her eye was severely damaged.
Her eye healed but she lost all facial expressions on the left side :(

So the real question is: was it as loud as when that propane tank exploded in that bonfire back in your home town?? THAT was one hell of a story!

Hope your hearing comes back. I had DH tube explode inside an Arrow (double bead) DH tire right in my face at about 110 psi. Blew the tire completely off the wheel and TACO'd the rim. Couldn't hear a damn thing for about 2 hours!

That sucks dude, I tried to tell the boy to stick with a UST tire causes I was 99.9% sure it wasn't gonna work, but no no no, he had to do it his own way. Glad nothing too serious came of it.

Why would you try inflating a DH tire to 110 psi?
It will allow the bead to fully seat even when its at a hight pressure. I'm sure John doesn't ride them at that pressure is just the initial inflation so the DH tire doesn't wobble as much.

No need to put 110 psi to seat a bead. With a tire that big, 60 psi will do.

I feel your pain.

I did it last week to a road tire. The damn tube popped and ripped the sidewall of the tire also.

My ears were ringing for 2 days, and my dog wouldn't come near me for another week!

I would have liked to see the tire flying off and the Stan's going everywhere. Damn that would have been funny!

If I remember John's storty correctly, 60 psi, soapy water, cursing etc just wouldn't do, AND the guage on their pump was found to be reading much lower pressure than actual, after the fact.

Ya it freaked me out! Especially that I only have one good eye (lost the vision in the other one in a similar feak accident when I was young). I think I might have to start wearing my goggles every time I work on my bike ;)

Last time something like this happened to me was like 9-10 years ago when I was inflating a tire on a V-brake rim - well wormed out rim, since the bead of the tire tore the lip of the RIM!! the thing literally exploded and shot out like sharp whip - I was lucky that I was on the opposite side of the explosion since it would of cut me up!

John P. – hahha, I’m sure it was as loud! Even Carlos just stood there for like a minute, getting back to his sense, trying to figure out WTF happened!!

Boy do I know the feeling. One tire going off in the shop was enough for me. When we test at high psi, we put the tire outside with the pump connected, then close the garage door where we wait safely on the other side. Road tires blowing off at 150psi is definetly something to remember.

As for the sealant in the eye, if it is real Stan's sealant or anything made with liquid latex actually then there is ammonia in there, something you do not want in your eye. Flush it out real good and keep an eye on it, no pun intended. There is a warning about that in the Stan's kit instructions and on the packaging.

after getting back to my senses I took a shower and rinsed my eyes thoroughly. I’ve also used some Visine last night and this morning…seems to be okay, although I can still feel that something flew in my eye. Should be fine – I hope.

heh, I always worry about this happening when I am filling tires at the shop with the air compressor..I've had it happen before, I haven't had it happen recently, but once is enough :D

That is certainly the exception, not the rule. At one point three of my bikes had tubless tires, 1 with non ust tires on ust rims, 1 with a ust tire on a non ust rim the other tire neither ust, and my dh bike with non ust tires and non ust rims. But until you have it seated, there's no reason to use a pressure so high that it throws sh!t across the room. Use your hands to roll the tire and seat the bead, not insane pressures. It works. There's no reason Carlos can't make it happen.

Well, if he ever touches that tire again without shaking that is.

Sorry to hear about your accident.

My last Stans installation I put a little extra rim tape on and inflates the tire on the bike with the bike upside with my floor pump. Before inflate I make sure the tire is placed correctly.

well my compressor isn't that powerful...so that is the last things I thought would happen. We almost had it tho...there were only a few air leaks - that's until it all came out via that one single leak ;)

I had the same thing happen to me ....
I siliconed the beads and inflated two 3.0 arrows mounted on sun doublewides (back in the day) up to about 85 psi then set them aside (to let the beads set) as I continued to build my customers bike I began to install the cassette and rotor on the rear one and the bead blew right in my face! it was so loud that people outside in the parking lot thought that someone had fired a shotgun in the shop! :dead:

If you guys try that again, don't keep adding air once you get the tire even partially inflated. Try to let the sealant do it's job and fill some of the spaces that are leaking. ..........and wear eye protection
:blah:

Tire= Arrow 3.0 w/double bead. Means Pressure must be very high to seat on a Sun rim.
Pump= buddy's old school Silca with guage that was off by about 40%
Bulldog= correct

Glad to hear that you are ok. That is some scary **** when that happens! You could probably adjust your air compressor and dial it down to about 40 psi (most compressors have it).

I did actually have a UST tire explode yesterday at the 12 hour race, but nothing like what y'all have experienced. I was descending down a fairly rocky section and the next thing I know is a loud KABOOOM and the bike immediately starts to get squirrely. Looking at the tire, I had a huge 3" gash on the tire, almost as if it was cleanly cut by a knife. BTW, I had no extra inner tubes or a pump (STOOPID) ... :mumble: I was screwed until this cool dude managed to stop by and lend me his tube and CO2 cartridge about 20-30 minutes after it actually happened. If he ever reads this (which I doubt will happen), props to him.

Same thing happened at work. I was two floors below in the elevator and I thought someone hit the door with a sledge hammer. I get upstairs and there is white **** allllllll over the place. The guy who did it thought he busted his finger too.

Anyone at bigwheels? There was like 6 tires that just blew up while they were being ridden, all with huge booms. Kind of weird...

Over there somewhere.
Had the tire explosion thing happen to me 3 times prior with an air compressor. The third time I lost the feeling in my thumb and pointer finger on my right hand permanently. That is the reason I now only use a floor pump to inflate any tires.

That was only your first time?!?

I've had at least 3 Maxxis do that, funny thing is they WERE the UST tires on a UST rim. I've actually never had one of the Non-UST tires do that.

Make sure you got none of that crap in your eyes, I think the ammonia can make you go blind.

I blew up a Slime tube inside a road tire I didn't have fully seated in the back of a shop once. I think it made one customer pee there pants, but they were too embarrassed to admit it. I couldn't hear the rest of the day and it took two for the feeling in my hand to come back that was holding the wheel. The mess from the Slime was unreal, we were picking it off tools for the next month.
