LOS ANGELES Influential illustrator Kelly Freas, who produced sleek, stirring images for science fiction and fantasy books, has died at age 82.

Freas, who had attended the Art Institute of Pittsburgh in the late 1930s, died in his sleep yesterday (Sunday) at his home in Los Angeles.

Freas had a career that spanned more than 50 years. He illustrated the covers or the pages of books by writers including Isaac Asimov, Robert Heinlein, Arthur C. Clarke, A-E Van Vogt, Poul Anderson and Frederik Pohl.

And in seven years as the main cover artist of Mad Magazine, Freas also helped shape the image of Mad Magazine mascot Alfred E. Newman.
