I broke out an old 7 speed wheel that has been collecting dust for about 6 years in the closet and mounted it in one of my old bikes to check it out. It came with the bike and I immediately removed it when I brought the bike home years ago. It has maybe 20 miles on it max. The wheel has a Shimano Acera-X hub and Sun AT18 rims with DT 14 straight gauge spokes.
I started adjusting the derailleurs up with the new/old wheel and not only was it seriously out of true, at one point in the rotation I would hear a slight kerplunk...kerplunk. It was always in the same part of the wheel rotation. You think it is a frozen bearing maybe?
I removed the cassette and remounted it and tried it again. Same thing. The lube still looks great when peering into the end of the freehub that I can see into.
Any ideas on what I should do? Overhaul it? It is for all practical purposes a new wheel, even if it is old.
I picked up some Phil's Tenacious Grease and Tenacious Oil for possibly ripping the thing apart. I haven't tried this lube before so do you think it would be a good choice to use on the wheel for hub lubrication?
Thanks,
mudpup
