First off, I'd love to see Kerry tell the Catholic Church to go screw themselves and excommunicate him if they don't like it. We don't live in a theocracy (yet.)

I'd also like to see them go after Scalia for his wholehearted support of the death penalty, but I'm sure they won't do that. I called a Catholic organization (the American Life League) a few weeks ago, and asked them about that myself (after they had an ad in USA Today about denying Kerry communion due to his pro-life stance.)

The response: Apparently supporting abortion is a mortal sin, while supporting the death penalty is not (even though the Pope is against the death penalty.) The woman refused to believe me when I tried to explain the concept of "quickening" to her. She told me that the Catholic church has always frowned on abortion (which isn't true, but why argue with a true believer...)

So, 2 parts here:

1) Why do we care what a church thinks? I'm sure no one would pay attention to the Nation of Islam supporting a candidate. Why bother with the Catholic Church?

2) Is this just a right wing attention ploy? If so, why should Kerry care.

I just wish we had a politician with the guts to admit he doesn't believe in God. It would be political suicide...but it would be a nice change.

after UK´s, dont forget what happens with excommunicated kings or leaders. :D

anyway, the catholics have much more to loose by excommunicating kerry than just hanging in there. after all, a "catholic" president in protestant US have not happened in a while.

I'm confused, so you can't take Communion unless you are without sin? I think the saying goes: "let he who is without sin cast the first stone."
