Kerry Says His 'Family' Owns SUV, Not He
Friday April 23, 2004 12:46 AM

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Does John Kerry, who supports higher automobile fuel economy standards, own a gas-guzzling SUV? He does, but says it belongs to the family, not to him.

During a conference call Thursday with reporters to discuss his upcoming jobs tour through West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Ohio and Michigan, the Democratic presidential candidate was asked whether he owned a Chevrolet Suburban.

``I don't own an SUV,'' said Kerry, who supports increasing existing fuel economy standards to 36 miles per gallon by 2015 in order to reduce the nation's dependence on foreign oil supplies.

Kerry also has made rising gasoline prices an issue in the campaign against President Bush. In Houston on Thursday, Kerry said the president broke a 2000 campaign pledge to ``jawbone'' oil-producing nations by pressuring them to increase their output.

Kerry thought for a second when asked whether his wife, Teresa Heinz Kerry, had a Suburban at their Ketchum, Idaho, home. Kerry said he owns and drives a Dodge 600 and recently bought a Chrysler 300M. He said his wife owns the Chevrolet SUV.

``The family has it. I don't have it,'' he said.

Kerry said it's important for his family to buy American cars and pledged to keep car manufacturing jobs in the country if elected. He said he is interested in a hybrid car, and has talked to Ford about making it the ``campaign car.''

``We're going to keep jobs in America and help the industry be more competitive with foreign manufacturers that are building those cars today,'' Kerry said.

The Massachusetts senator said he'll release more details during the jobs tour about his plans to keep jobs in the country.

``I want cars to be made in Michigan, made in America, made'' by the United Auto Workers, Kerry said.

therein lies the difference....Bush will pull up to a clean air ralley in an Escalade and get out and say "ya'll like my new wheels?!"....Kerry on the other hand will bemoan the bastards driving SUVs all day long (unless he's speaking to a Union that makes SUVs) and try to pull a Clinton when asked if he has one....unfortunately for him he's nowhere near as teflon as slick willie...

er, if his wife drives the suv, what's the big deal? besides, bush doesn't "work" on a ranch, he's just driven around for photo ops and recreation. sorta like the dress-up-as-a-fighter-pilot stunt, ya know

I guess we have already debated the real issues to death, time to nitpick. I gues it does not matter anyway the average voter knows nothing about the issues and just goes with their gut feeling they from the 1.2 actual facts they hear on the nightly news everyday.

LMAO!

Kerry and/or his wife own an SUV? Gee, that's something most American voters will be unable to relate to.

Who gives a flying monkey fock? My wife and I own an SUV and we support higher fuel standards. Don't take our SUV away, just make it more efficient.

Interestingly auto makers think that SUV buyers won't want to by hybrid SUVs because of their "green" image.

i understand there's a tax break for buying a new one, which may offset the higher price. So many things about a hybrid SUV just make sense. Haven't heard a good argument against it yet (besides it's for sissies).

I'm w/ you: make the current breed more efficient.

yeah, I am seriously thinking about the ford escape hybrid , the only thing is I don't like the escape at all, I would like something a bit bigger ( explorer, jeep grand cherokee size). But I'm still thinking about it anyways becasue I really like SUVs and I feel it very important to be very fuel effeicent. Its kinda a inter-struggle every time I drive my 13mpg pickup. So I'm getting ride of it in about a month and not getting anything new until I need to, and just bike to work.

people are missing the point of N8s post. It has nothing to do with the fact that Kerry has an SUV, no one gives a chit about that. The issue is the context under which his SUV ownership came into play. It's not the end all be all I won't vote for that guy now thing, just an insight into how he operates.

Here, try this, forget all the politcal stuff...forget who we're talking about and think of this (close your eyes, no wait, don't cause then you can't get the next part): you're chillin with a friend having some beers and he starts bagging on your vehicle choice and telling you how he's all about clean air and that your killing the planet by driving your Blazer to work. Then he talks for a while all about how he takes pride in only owning/driving mid size sedans and such and how people should do like he does. BUT you know this guys wife drives a suburban and he takes it out as well...don't you think you'd tell him he's full of chit?

kerry is a career politician (sp?) and he's going to say whatever the group he's talking to at that moment wants to hear...that's what they do....

i agree with that, that kerry is a politician through and through, and rides the waves of political expediency. or something like that. :D but even with suv-gaffes in mind he still comes across as much less of a scumbag than gwb.

and if that's you're opinion then I have no problem with it! what I don't like is the people that are sooooo caught up in their dubya hating that they make kerry out to be some kind of saint. when the guy gets caught in a straight up lie/word bending session just admit it and follow that up with "but I'd still take him over bush"

:p - Per ABCNews: Now his "...ribbons are medals are ribbons are medals..." lie is biting him in the a$$...

:p:p:p

I don't know a single vet (myself included) that would EVER claim a ribbon is a medal or vicea versa...

Kerry is a complete and total TOOL... no question about it.

But jesus christ. Fine. But you don't think that the Kerry hating-pro Bush banter is EXACTLY the same?? There are plenty of posts (cough... N8) that make bush out to be a saint. How is this any different.

Kerry's a bad choice. However, if you made me pick between a cold and tuberculosis, I wouldn't prefer either, but I know which one I would pick...

As for HEV's being for sissies and "just make the existing ones more efficient"

We are kinda reaching a limit I think for internal combustion engines (ICE) barring some tremendous breakthough.

Right now at best an ICE is about 30% efficient. And I mean the actual usable energy given off by the exploding fuel mixture. A ton of the energy is used up in heat, the rest is noise, friction, etc...

So your $2/gal is actually only giving you 60 cents worth of movement.

Electric motors however are freakishly torquey, and way more efficient. "We" built an HEV at school and it would blow the doors off most cars. Many a cloud of tire smoke was made. I think people really aren't aware of the potential electric motors (and subsequently car), have.
