Yes, the Keystone Climax is cancelled. "The moose out front shoulda told ya". Alright, super big bummer, I'll admit. But what may be an even bigger bummer is the other affects of this gondi overhaul. How much riding will there be this summer if just this race is affected? What the heck just happened here?

The gondola is going to have a HUGE impact on summer ops. Probably into '09. It's not really a statement about Keystone's lack of commitment to the event, it's just the opposite. They're bummed out, but are realistic enough to realize that when they hav Sikorski Sky Crane helos ready to roll with cement and lift towers that an event going on in their midst would spell catastrophe.

They backed out because they didn't want their summer construction to negatively impact an event of which they were justifiably proud. A lot of good folks at the resort sunk a lot of themeselves into the Climax over the past 10 years.

It'll be back. Tay tuned for replacement venue info.

Thank god they are building something as important as a town gondola for all those Texans that can't keep their Houston Handbags in one piece during the 5 minute walk through the village.

Okay, this is what I found. Go here for the article.

  • They're building an 8 man, walk-in style, glass from floor to ceiling (sounds like something similar to Vail's), dopplymayr (sp?) gondola.
  • The base of this new gondi will be in the Hunki Dori lot (may it RIP).
  • Top to bottom average trip time is less than 12 minutes and will move twice the amount of people per hour.
  • It will operate winter and summer.
  • They are re-doing the bridge so you can ski to the new base station. (Summer 09)
  • It will still stop at the top where the existing station is, but will add a mid-mtn stop for uploading and downloading.
  • More Vail Resort condos around the new base station.

Sounds like River Run/Keystone is in for some changes! Does anyone know if the trails will be open? Will the quad still be running? This could be the summer of Sol.
