any input on this thing?

I have enough spare parts around that I can put it together for less than $200. I need something to tow a trailer and that's it. Bike paths, maybe an occasional 8 mile commute.

i went the same route. my current road/cx/kid hauler is a nashbar special. this at least has 135 rear spacing so wheels will be easy to find. i say go for it.

If you feel like building something and using up some parts you can do that. But around here you can pick up clean Trek FX or Giant Escapes all day long on craigslist.

That is entirely too many buzz words, but they forgot enduro gnar fatbike.

nearest I can find is a $400 trek FX Disc....

I wouldn't mind a simple old 26" MTB, but even those seem overpriced.

will get tires soon. Wanted to measure clearance before buying anything. And I'll probably use my m636s so i can pedal without clips for the random "dad let's go for a bike ride".

So far I'm $140 into it. Debating my drivetrain as I can get a full 11 speed setup for the same cost as a pair of 9 sp shifters and a derailleur. The prices people are asking for used garbage is insane.

oh yeah, does anybody have suggestions for tires? I can get michelin proteks, panaracer pasela, or nomad resist tires all for about the same price in 700x35c. I think that's as big as I can get.

As much as I dislike Schwalbe, a lot of folks around here seem to have good success with the Durano on their bikes:
Feels fast like a road tire and seems to be pretty efficient at stopping punctures from small bits of gravel or glass. I can only find them up to 28 mm though.

I run Schwalbe Marathon Plus tires on my commuter. Nary a flat in several thousand miles.

The Marathon is their commuter/touring tire, even more protection but feels sluggish compared to the Durano.

And Plus has another layer under the tread yet.
