Where would you go?

So the hill is split into two sides pretty much? Is one better than the other?
Pretty much. The Western Territory (Western Express lift) is where the world cup track is. Its got alot of the harder trails and a huge drop (cupcake). The Basin area (Ballhooter lift) has machine cut flow trails and the raw, natural letter trails.

You also have the back country trails. I always recommend a trip out to the fire tower.

There's the finger trails beside the village that are cool to check out too.

Last time I looked at Snowshoe, the accommodations could in no way be considered cheap.
There are some pretty expensive accommodations there, but there's some very reasonable ones to. We looked around and found several condo's for next year under $2000 for a week that will accommodate 6 people with a full kitchen. It also includes the summer fun pass for everyone. I thought that was reasonable.

A buddy did a solo trip while down on work, balked at what they wanted for night and ended up doing a cold commando camp somewhere on the mountain - flats maybe?
I've camped in the parking lot at the top of the world before. It was incredible.

I probably won't go, as the trial selection looks pretty limited, especially with no black tech trails?

Coming from the north, which is why I ask. Should probably stop in PA by the looks of it.

A BREWERY you say eh?? Well then, might not be riding on Wednesday when we get there, but now I know what I'm doing. Assuming they aren't closed.......

How have I missed this thread. . . lord.

Ya man old spruce is the shit. One of the better food options on the hill too. Not sure where in the village you plan to stay, but you can ride the fingers trails on the way to dinner. Although its a bitch of a pedal back, or have GF drive down there.

Closing weekend will probably be pretty quiet, it usually is. Will also be pretty chilly too, breakfast sando at the Wildcat Grocery is the best breakfast option in my opinion.

The back country stuff is some of the more fun options to ride. Most of the stuff is on trail forks, use the heat map too as a few of the good ones aren't labeled yet. Basin side letter trails can get pretty spicy, but are short. DD, A, & B are a hoot.
Western side is much longer but not as steep in some spots, although has its moments. ProDH(start off the skyline split) to Lincoln log, is the shit dreams are made of.

I am one of the trailbuilders at Wildside. We just got a contract to double the amount of trails, including building a proper dh track and more tech trails. Helene just caused some mud slides that will need to be remediated, and most of the crew has dispersed to help with disaster cleanup in the region- but some new DH stuff is certainly coming!

Sweet, thanks for the tips!

We are staying at one of the spots on Powderidge Road, which I guess is it the north end of the resort? Here: https://www.google.com/maps/place/Powderidge+Rd,+Snowshoe,+WV+24934,+USA/@38.4222696,-79.9965263,851m/data=!3m2!1e3!4b1!4m6!3m5!1s0x884b70c4ea9dfac5:0xc2b640d7f86e8770!8m2!3d38.4222654!4d-79.9939514!16s/g/1hhlvldnq!5m1!1e1?entry=ttu&g_ep=EgoyMDI0MDkyOS4wIKXMDSoASAFQAw==

What are the finger trails? I assume those are the trails in between Powderidge and Old Spruce?
These?

And then the back country trails are on the ridge to the east - 6000 steps, Bail Out etc?

Nice! Sorry about the storms, it looks no good down there :( Hopefully your new trails aren't too screwed up.

Cool, looks like you are staying across the road from the entrance to the fingers. Yes, that’s them. Tiger King is ok, I think to the brewery is more fun. You can climb up the the “airport” from the brewery and ride linwood, upper and lower beaver damn, bitchy beaver and the lot. They are more chill and a pretty cool rainforest feel. (Just looked) Linwood as I know it is called Smokey shadows on trail forks. Take t
It down to ruff and tumble. That will get you to the western chair lift.

Yes, don’t ride 6000 it’s lame. MK, unemployment highway and bail out are good. There is a new loamer just past bail out. It’s not on there but the heat map is. You can catch the basin chair on these, or if you start early pedal back up. It’s a gravel road and not too bad 35-40min climb from the basin side back up.

Any word on how Rock Creek held up? I know you've spent some time there and might have heard something.

The bridge into the lower unpaved parking lot at Rock Creek washed out, which is a bummer.
I haven’t heard about trail status( everyone is out helping their neighbors, or at Mt Ste Anne) but even a few landslides or a failure on the paved road won’t phase that crew. Collegiate Nationals at Rock Creek are cancelled- WNC isn’t going to be ready for tourists in the next few weeks.

I made my way into my jobsite in Brevard today, our mtb trailwork held up to the deluge but some of the paved roads failed.
I billed 58 hours last month cleaning up snags and clearing blockages on our waterfalls. The torrents i saw today were stupifying.

nothing in the village open? my guess is that at least by tomorrow, and certainly by friday. did you try wildcat provisions?.
Yeah literally no where at the top is open. There is maybe all of 30 cars around there. We are one of 3 cars on powderridge road.

Silver Creek here is bumping with 20 cars :busted:

All good. People suck anyways.

I talked with Neeko at MSA and he said the trails at Rock Creek and Kanuga are both in pretty good shape. He also said the first bridge he built at Rock Creek only took 2 days to build so he wasn't worried about it.

They are not opening as to not draw people to the area yet. The trails sound like they'll be ready by the end of the week.

Ride report; not really sure what I expected, but Snowshoe is a pretty rad bike park.

Lots of jumps, trails and different options. Not much steep stuff, but who cares.

I'd rate this place higher than some other parks I've been to (*cough* *cough* Revelstoke..).

Pro DH to Lincoln Log was sweet, as recommended by @sunringlerider . I wish I had more time on the trails though, so many little options on the trails.

What sucks is the Canadian dollar. $60 lift pass converts to $96 Canadian, FML.

I did Rooty Pebbles as my last lap, which was a bad move knowing my hands were already smoked. Not sure why they named it "Rooty", as it's fuckin rocky

Also on Rooty Pebbles there are the same camera stand things as on Hardball. Is that where part of the world Cup XC was run or what?

Forgot to mention that the Western side felt exactly like Bromont, just maybe less steep. It was great.

The community seems to be ok. I haven't been up there, we were gone to Canada when the storm hit and just got back this week.

As an update, Kanuga is opening Monday 10/14 and Rock Creek is opening 10/18. They said 80% of trails will be open by then. I saw them resurfacing some trails this week.

If your going there a week its almost better to get the season pass that's on sale for $289. That's only 5 days lift passes. Then you have a reason to come back.

I just came back from Canada and I had the opposite reaction. Gas up there was like $4.30 a gallon US, La Massif was roughly $60 us a person, and food was pretty much a wash. The only thing cheap up there was MSA. lol

So, you think Snowshoe is as good as Bromont? I haven’t been to Bromont since 2018 or Snowshoe since 2019,
but Bromont, to me, is just worlds better. Snowshoe was too flat when i started going there in 1995 with v-brakes, and it’s still too flat.

It’s hard for me to understand why anyone goes to Snowshoe unless they live in Michigan or something.

other than windrock, what other lift access trails in the region are less flat? i don't think beech, sugar, or rock creek are really any steeper overall...would love to find more steeps! maybe the new place north of asheville? although, i wonder how they were affected by the storm/flooding...

Exactly! Why DO people bother driving into the middle of nowhere to ride uninspired, stale trails when everyone in the Southeast has stuff that has much more love put into it at home?
With the number of quality spots closer to population centers I just don’t get the appeal of Snowshoe? It “feels” big?
Basin side is stuck in amber, i swear most of it was the same in 2003 as it was in 2019!

Corporate bikeparks(ski industry corporate, to be clear) just kinda gimme the heeebiejeebies, especially when they have a “company lumber town” theme, intentionally.
I much prefer riding in NC or VA where there are LOCAL economies to support.

No I just meant the Western side or whatever of Snowshoe felt like Bromont - the terrain and trails seemed similar.

But Bromont is better; they have quadruple the trails, steeper and the new lift is much faster.

BUT, Bromont has been BALLS busy and crowded the last few years. They've also begun to make some questionable trail changes - removing rock sections etc. Still good though.

But we're going to Windrock tomorrow and I'll be sure to pickup a shirt or something.

I'm also from Ontario, so any bike park is better than what we have back home. :busted:

Coming from Flatario, Snowshoe is still fun. Maybe not the steepest but there is some fun to be had. I prefer Thunder though, closer too.

Letter trails have some decent steepness and can be especially spicy when wet.

Windrock is supposed to be running dang good today, have fun!
It's dry as shit and slippery. It's a great place for sure.

I admit I feel intimidated though. Between the concrete like ground with loose stuff on-top and nothing being marked, it's got me being pretty hesitant.

There's a pretty sweet new section on Reach Around, where they must have just raked the leaves off and said have at her, but getting to it is quite meh.

Perhaps because of the storms, but also looks like half the trails aren't really ridden?

The new shop they built is really nice.

The lady shuttle driver is brutal with the bumps haha
