Lajitas, Texas (November 21, 2002) The organizers of
the Lajitas Chihuahuan Desert Challenge and the
administration of Lajitas Resort, The Ultimate Hideout
announced today the cancellation of the 2003 Lajitas
Chihuahuan Desert Challenge Mountain Bike Race &
Festival. Mike Long, the Race Director and Proprietor
of Desert Sports, said, In spite of the generous
support that Lajitas has given in the past and has
offered for next year, the event has been cancelled for
2003 due to financial and logistical considerations.
We will work with Desert Sports to create a new and
different event for 2004 which is more manageable given
the size of Lajitas and the reduction in our
accommodations capacity, said Daniel Hostettler, Vice
President of Operations and Managing Director of
Lajitas, The Ultimate Hideout. Desert Sports will seek
additional sponsorship sources for the 2004 event.
Planning is already underway for next years event
including a new mountain bike trail system at Lajitas
to be completed in the spring of 2003.
We believe strongly that some sort of similar event is
beneficial to both the Big Bend community and Lajitas;
however, we support Mike in his decision not to proceed
next year. We will utilize this winter season to work
with Desert Sports to create a trail system at Lajitas
offering access to the public and resort guests,
stated Hostettler. The event has drawn up to 800 racers
in past years and is renowned for having one of the
worlds Top 25 Cross-Country Mountain Bike Race
Courses.

That is right, some idiot corporation is building a golf course in the middle of the fu@#ing desert. 1/2 of the race course is gone, and the owners of the resort that sponsors the race are just not interested in cyclists.
Meanwhile they keep pumping water out to irrigate the fairways.... And the Rio Grand is at all time low levels affecting other tourism in the area. Rafting trips through big bend are having a difficult time finding a season with enough water...
Does this look like a desert to you?
I attended the Lajitas race this yearand last. This year it was apparent that cyclists were not appreciated...
Rumor has it that it is doubfull that Mike Long and Desert Sports will be able to host a 2004 race, no matter how optomistic the press release is.
