Smith Rock State Park just north of Bend about 25 minutes has some great winter/spring riding if it isn't too snowy or raining. Some of the trails can get unbearably mucky if the weather has been crappy but they don't get much snow or rain there usually. Derek and I spent a few hours riding mostly singletrack and got some decent climbing in (the climb to Gray Butte is about 1300'). The trail was pretty tacky in most places on the shaded side and dried out on the sun side. Great times, no people.

Derek enjoying dirt.

Nice ! you need some rock though !
No, I like my trails varied. I don't always want to ride in trees, and I don't always want to ride in rock. This is my cool winter spot to just enjoy singletrack. Variation is the spice of ride.

That's cool Heidi ... in NE .. we don't have the vistas like you folks have out west. I love that.

Splat ... wouldn't it be cool to take a trip out west some time?
Or perhaps we should just run away from home for a month, eh?

Nice, good motivation to put the skate park/street riding down for a moment and enjoy some MTB rides.
Good post.

nice.. I liked Smith rock a lot. we hiked up to (actually across from Monkey face)
I've done the traverse from that spot to the monkeys mouth (on a rope) and then climbed to the top of Monkey Face. Scared the **** out of me - hated it. That was the day I retired from climbing.

I could imagine.. there wasnt anyone on it while I was there.. but I could tell it was a tough one.. on another day we climbed a much easier section lower down
