With a lawn that size you want a lawn boy (a human, not the mower). Well, baboon may want a lawn girl, you'll have to work that part out. But, just remember, it will mean more time for riding!

I agree with a lawn service... if you breakdown the cost of the tractor mower its just not worth it.

If I were you, would definitely consider the John Deere L110, or the Limited edition L118, but I may be biased as I sit here in my John Deere shirt.

Babs, I think the X series might be abit much for you to handle. :)

Don't waste your $$$ MtnBikerChk...... I mow over 1.5 acres with a mower very similar to the link to the one below (only diff is mine is 25HP) and I mow it in under 1.5 hours. Briggs & Stratton engine, super relaible.......mine has worked flawless for two summers of intense Southern mowing! The price is right, unlike the John Deere

I've definitely been turned off by JDs prices - that's why craftsman is on the list....

so what does more hp do for a lawn tractor that doesn't haul or push anything?

Trust me, the JD ain't worth it......as far as HP goes it means nothing if you are not going to use your mower for tractor duties..........17 HP is PLENTY. Sears also offers a real nice warrenty plan where they will come to your residence to work on your mower should something go wrong instead of you having to bring it to them, I got the plan but this mower has had no issues.......they also delivered it for free.

Actually, our entire lot is 1.1 acre, so after you take into account the house, the driveway, the island and the woods, we probably have about half an acre to mow. I'd like to learn how to care for my lawn without using a lawn service. We move in Monday. WOO HOO!

Push it then. That is not enough lawn for a rider, unless you are old or rich. Get a good push mower with the self propelled option.

Tractors are for either uppity rednecks or ones who have lost their drivers license to DWI convictions. If you have a lot so big that you need a ride mower, quit being a skinflint and pay a contractor to do it.

Get the most powerful Honda-powered pusher you can to get through grass when it's high or wet. Self-propelled and key start are nice features, but not needed unless your lot is hilly or your arm weak.

ok - how do I know what we need/want?

I think I want a gas powered lawn tractor but that's as far as I can decide on my own :help:

edit: Oh, and brands I've been checking out: Toro, Craftsman & John Deere

and we have 1 acre....

Man I wish I had a big grassy area that would warrant a cool John Deere riding lawnmower...

You should definitely get the John Deere...I don't know anything about them or lawnmowers...but they have the sassiest lookin green rigs...you gotta get some 20's for it :D

Get a push mower and a snow shovel, and pay that snotty teenager down the street $10 every time he mows your lawn or shovels your drive.

Worked for my parents, although the snotty teenager was live-in for them.....

Food for thought, I have my Briggs, Techuseh, and Kohler papers as an authorized tech, we do all kinds of repairs and warranty claims on MTD, etc...keep in mind that you get what you pay for! The deeres are built a little sturdier and are built better and the price reflects that. You don't know how many Murray's/MTD's I get through the shop and their built like junk. I absolutely hate working on the things. I also hear that Craftsman warranty is a hassle. Uncle had one, took it back 6 times in a month for service and really had to argue with them to get anything paid for. My adivce, I'd look at a Husqavarna front deck, nice machines

Shut up and Ride
JD=waste of $$

goto sears, buy a mulching push mower, using a rider to go around all they landscaping you have will be a pain in the arse

ok, so I have less to mow and have a rider, but I use both (push & rider) when I mow

First, decide if you are willing to push mow it. An acre is a lot for some people, a breeze for others. If you go with a push mower, do you want self propelled or not? I would say yes, but that's just me.

Second, decide if you want to be able to bag the grass, or just leave the clippings on the lawn. What about mulching? Leaving grass clipping on the lawn is better for the grass (think natural fertilzation), but regular clippings can look bad if you don't mow often enough. Mulching cuts the clippings up much smaller, to the point where you don't see them from the road. Get a mower that bags if you want a bagger, mulches if you want a mulcher.

Third, decide on your budget, and find one that fits in your budget. The more HP the better. More HP will cut through longer/thicker/wetter grass better.

I definitely recommend a Honda. My father is a nut about his lawn (mows 3-4 times a week, brews up his own concotions of fertilizers, does all kinds of crazy stuff, but has an awesome lawn) and has had his honda for 13 years. I've had mine for 4 years, no problems with either of ours. All we do is change the oil every spring. you can spend $400 on a craftsman mower every 5 years or $600 on a honda every 15 years. You do the math.

No problemo pushing a mower. Self propelled would be nice, but not absolutley ncessary.

I want a mulcher.

A mower isn't exactly a big ticket item, so we'll spend whatever we have to spend for a good mower.

Did you look at PO's link. That is a high dollar mower.
$1399 is not much more than a fair rider would be ;)
Still a lot of money to get the grass done!

If you do get a push, get the widest deck you can find.
