Ok. I had a serious scare last weekend when I basicly jumped on the top my head from 10 feet and heard a loud crack so I decided my previous argument that I don't need a leat is silly.
I wonder what helmets and armours work well with which leat models (a*, leat, moveo, whatever else there is). I now rock a dainese and a the helmet and I look for the least restrictive leat. I notice some pros stopped wearing leat so it kinda makes me worried it restricts you a lot. What are your opinions monkeys.

Is that true? I've never tried on a D3, certainly not with a brace but it generally looks bulkier than a D2. Is the D3 higher up along the bottom rim of the helment or something?
Exactly D3 is higher in the lower back end...
And because D3 is wider than D2, it will work better with Leatt braces.

When I had the D2, I had the impression it was narrower than the Leatt brace width.

The has a similar profile to the D2 so that is good news. Why did you remove your backplate?
If you don't you have to stick the Leatt inside the backplate to make it work properly. And that means you have to cut your jersey to slide it in or wear the jersey over the back of Leatt. I tried both and it didn't feel right. And it took someone else helping me at times to get everything on correctly.

The best solution for me was just removing the backplate. (I also tried removing the top 2 plates, but still felt restricted.) Yeah, you lose some protection, but I usually don't fall on my back anyway. And being comfortable means I ride better and less likely to screw up in the first place.

Make sure you get the thin padding for Leatt. It is only a couple of mm thinner but does make a difference.

Yeah but using that argument you could ditch the leat as well ;) In my last crash I also hit my back. Had my back hurt on all its length so I will not do that. Without the backplate who knows how hurt I'd be. I was lucky to walk away with a broken finger and some pain in the lungs for the next few days (don't know the correct medical english term for what happened)

It is all a series of compromises. I value my neck more than my back :D Try it out and see what works for you. The Alpinestars brace might allow you to wear it over the top of the backplate. My friend does with his armor.

Norbar, how many times do I have to tell you, that there is no 100% LB compatible DH armor :P
Yes, you can get numerous MX roosters/buzers, but they offer chest protection from derbies and rather poor back protection.
The problem with using classic DH armor (like Dainese or 661) with LB is that armor is tight fit. Which means, LB won't move independently, as it is advised by LB itself.
Yes, you can slide LB's rear fin under backplate or remove part of armor's backplate to make the combo work. But, you rather won't be able to do this with the front of the armor.
My advise for you is to use LB with Dainese on braces/suspenders and POC elbow pads, which you like so much. Yes, you won't have anything to protect your chest, but you'll have best set of protectors available IMO.

Leatt Pro, D3, Troy Lee Shock Dr T with some pads removed, so far its been fine. I have not used the Leatt straps yet but might give them a try.

Leatt Moto GPX Club plus:

SixSixOne Evo Carbon or
Urge Down-O-Matic; plus:

SixSixOne Vapor (much like my old Pro PS) - - just tuck the Leatt strut under the spine armor; or:

SixSixOne Prodigy (hard shell) - - was designed to be Leatt-compatible and is. Works perfectly.

Not to say that a broken back isn't a big deal but...

The higher up a spinal cord problem is the worse it is. Therefore, broken neck is much worse than broken back.

I have seen way too many broken or injured necks including a close friend. Not so many serious broken backs (leading to paralysis) from MTB. But I don't have that many data points. Other similar sports have emphasis on neck injury but not so much on back. Feel free to shoot me down, because I don't have lot of facts on this area.

PS Just as I wrote above, I read via Twitter that Darren Berrecloth has broken his back: "Broke three vertibrae today on a front flip in my yard spinal cord is 100 percent. Faaaak"

POCs vpd spine works a treat with the leat since when it gets warm it moves 100% with your body and it is pretty thin. So you can run the leatt over the plate as normal. It really is a nice and workable combo, you wont find a more comfortable option for backprotection.

I'm thinking about all this armor + Leatt Brace thing since over a year, and I'm still not sure which would be the best combination for me. Right now I'm still just riding with my LB, without armor, as my 661 Pressure Suit Pro + LB feels really awkward.
To me the back protector is the most important next to a neck brace. Some years ago my buddy broke several vertebrae landing on a stump. Luckily he was wearing a good Dainese back-protector...

The armor I'm considering(some of it combined with elbow guards...):

Troy Lee Designs BP series
- I guess it's waaarm...

UFO Valkyrie 2
-should be a good combination with the Leatt

UFO Racing Ultralight Bodyguard
-a buddy got one, I will check it out this weekend. But his first impression was, that it is working pretty well with his Leatt Brace.

Dainese soft back protector
http://www.pinkbike.com/news/dainese-protection-sea-otter-2010.html
-made only for wintersports?
;)

Can't decide...

That looks interesting. "Visco elastic polymer". I guess it's similar to what 661/Poc are using? Looks hot though (as in keeping heat), but not much as the chick. Give us a report!

I have been running a Leatt with rockgardn flak jacket and it works good. Not great. I just order the TLD 7855 but afraid the pack protection is not good enough. Will see Friday when it comes in.

This combo has been working very well. Even on the steepest trails where i have to look waaay up, it's not an issue.

^^ No worries. I've liked how mine is working. The front and rear shoulder cap straps adjust, so you can open or close the neck openeing for your body/Leatt.

If I had one wish, it would be for SixSixOne to add a third, lower-spine panel on the back for complete spine coverage - - similar to the Alpinestars A10:

This stuff looks really cool :)
I like shoulder braces. Something just for me :)
However, ONB cost as much as LB, but doesn't have any adjustments.

Alright, yesterday I had the opportunity to fondle the Ufo EVO Ultralight Bodyguard vest and the TLD BP 7855 Jacket.

The Ufo Vest has a neat back protector that adapts to the back of the body when it reaches body temperature. Felt like viscous rubber. But on impact it gets hard and feels like stiff plastic. Pretty impressive, I guess the POC backprotector feels similar, while the Ufo one is definitively way thinner.
The drawback is, that the front chest protection is made from so soft foam, I doubt it can protect enough. It's pretty thick, but it just won't absorb enough energy, or distribute the impact energy to a bigger surface.

The TLD Jacket generally made an good impression too, felt just like described in the reviews. But the back protection really isn't strong enough to withstand sharp rocks and stuff like that.

Somewhere in KANURDUR
all this fit stuff is silly... Helmet manufactures need to start telling us what works and Leatt needs to start telling us what works. Because most of what gets thrown around on a day to day basis is complete bull and hype.

Take it from me.. working in a shop i am never going to say you can 100% stop a neck injury but whats to stop someone else from speculating better than me..

Anywhy here are some notes about helmet compatibility i have been working on with help from some friends. (doing resarch and asking manufacturers)

Troy Lee
D3 Yes
D2 No

Bell
Drop Yes

Giro
Remedy No

Pro Tec
No

Fox
V3R Yes

Plus most moto helmets

Does that mean that only those helmets will protect you? and that if you are wearing a D2 and leatt brace your neck brace isn't doing anything? No one can say because companies seem to remain so tight lipped about this kind of stuff.

So you're saying that the Leatt WON'T work with a Giro Remedy? Can anyone else comment on this?
