I just got one for Xmas and sprayed it with leather water proofer stuff from wilson's. Just seemed like the right thing to do.

That waterproof stuff stinks and doesn't do that great of a job. if i'm gonna wear mine in the rain, i carry an umbrella. boom problem solved.

Have you ever seen a cow spray any leather protectant on itself? No...

If it's leather, do nothing...if it's suede put that stuff on it...
