There was a recent story about a town, east coast, maybe in PA or NC I think - where the location was on par with holy grail locations like Moab, Sedona, Fruita, etc. The story is a town where factories shut down and a local rider wanted $8k from the bank to open a bike shop and was denied! He came back to apply for the same loan but said it was for furniture and it was approved. Of course he used it to start a shop that is now legendary - with epic trails to back up his mission.

Please tell me the name of this place. My sanity depends on it.

possibly in the vicinity of Boone, NC? you've got Pisgah, Tsali, Nantahala NF, etc. Easily some of the best riding in the USA, no debate about it. some of my favorite trails are in the Wilson Creek area outside of Boone. I highly recommend a roadtrip to check it all out and give yourself lots of time. It could take a lifetime to explore the entire area.

totally irrelevant to your inquiry, but there is an epic set of trails in west/central PA. Allegripis / Raystown Lake.
