hell, i've been in the same general area all my life (western MA, college in providence, then boston and 'burbs) aside from my period in ireland. it didn't make me want to move to arizona or georgia when i got back.
thats funny because Ireland is so much like Arizona.

going would be different, new, challenging. staying would be same, old, easy.

i hope you take advantage of the opportunity and it turns out to be the best year of your life to date, leaving you with a taste for adventure that never fades.

I think anyone who solicits advice on the internet for a life-changing decision, probably needs to get a mind of his own.

Thanks Dr. Phil.

I wasn't so much looking for advice as I was similar experiences and wondering what people like Narlus came away from it with.

You're welcome.

If you wanted people with experience in this type of move to render some advice, you could have said something along the lines of, "I know some of you have experience with this type of thing. What were the major factors that influenced your decision, what was your decision and what positives or regrets did you take from the experience?". Instead, you asked simply, "what would you do?".

Ask a dumb question, get a dumb answer. Sorry, I don't mean to be harsh...wait, yes I do. Grow up and learn to ask questions. If you're valuable enough to your company that they're going to send you to the Caribbean, you're probably smart enough to formulate cogent and coherent questions.

Don't be shy about salary requirements, most people don't have the sack to take ex-pat positions. Not only can you make more during your overseas work, you will be more valuable/experienced when you return.

Ok so there is about a 95% chance I'll be offered a job on a caribean island (Turks and Caicos) for a minimum of 1 year.
Seems like there will be a $10k salary increase and monthly plane tix, room and board paid for, health insurance, and some other stuff included.

What would you do if you had family, a GF(who might be able to come), a million other reasons to stay?

Don't even look back man....

Don't forget the digi-cam so you can take pics of the all the hot chicks on the beaches and re-vive the SA forum.

And, quit worrying about the biking part. You can score a beat up town bike and ride it everywhere. You can e-mtn bike on RM while relaxing on the beaches.

That's stupid. He didn't ask anyone to make his decision for him, he simply asked what would we do in that situation - and I'm sure his hope was that people who had valuable input would actually be smart enough to figure out that he was looking for some pros and cons.

Sure, it's just "the internet" - but it's no different from asking a question like this in the lunchroom at work. If he can get seventy five different opinions instead of just ten, isn't he better informed? Your dismissive tone is insulting to everyone who took the time to post their thoughts on the subject - simply because they were conveyed electronically doesn't make them any less valuable.

Missed this thread before, stosh, and obviously you have to make your own decisions (gee, I bet you never would have thought of that, huh?), but if there's a time to do something like this, it's now. Now, when you're young, with no kids, and nothing forcing you to stay. Even if you go and find out, at the end of the year, that you really didn't enjoy it that much - at least you won't spend the next ten years wishing you had taken the opportunity when it presented itself.

At worst, you will have had the experience and will know it's not for you. At best, it could change your life - as tmx said. You may find that you aren't the type to settle down in one city. Isn't that worth knowing about yourself?

Wow.... thank you!

Plus I have to ask you guys and not people at the lunch room table because it involves me leaving my job.....

I love my job here but I'm only making $2k more a year than I was 3yrs ago. Looking at that tells me I need to get out of here.

Not sure if this was addressed earlier, but just because the country doesn't have taxes doesn't mean the US gov. or your current state isn't going to want their cut.

Yeah, I was wondering this, too. Unless you leave all the money in a bank in the country you're working for won't the US government take a cut when in comes into the US?

well for one, you'd have a great chance to save some money most likely. i'm guessing that the cost of living is much cheaper, and w/ yr 10K increase it's a no brainer to sock away $$$ for yr house down payment.

you'll get a killer tan, and the monthly plane tix (back home i suppose) are pretty generous. i was given one home leave per year when i moved to ireland.

i say do it.
:stupid:

no kidding- hell, surfing can replace mountain biking as your major sport for a year or so.

stosh as a surfer. I can see it.

as for the $$$ side, you dont have to pay rent- major +, and it seems that more stuff will be paid for if you take it, and the $ increase will surely pad your bank account nicely.

go. dont look back. especially while you're still young. RM will still be here, we'll still be here, unless the FCC goes all whack and censors every word in the dictionary.

edit: i spell funny. changes made for the spelling/grammer/ar nazis. no, not capitalizing, however
