What's the lightest bottom bracket that will hold up under a downhill bike? Anyone run a Truvativ Gigapipe Max Ti?

i ran the FSA platmun pro for over a year and it held up perfectly. when i pulled the thing out of the box i could not believe how light it was.

BTW stay far away from anything that has a weight limit. those limits are for XC use only and will not hold up to DH abuse.(most TI BB have a 160-180 weight limit)

Old XTR BBs hold up just fine for me. But that's only worth mentioning if you have XTR cranks, and if you did, you wouldn't be asking, b/c that's the only BB you could use.

FSA Platinum Pro and Platinum have been great BBs for me as far as ISIS goes.

There's also the new crop of 2-piece cranks...I saw a set of new XTs survive a road-gap-gone-to-flat in Utah that I thought woulda snapped most cranks clean off. I'd pimp them.

True dat MikeD, I got the new XT's based on my burning love for the ever faithful M950/952 XTR's with the M950 BB... Still not sure WTF I was thinking selling my trusty set

The XTs strong enough? I am about 155 and want some for my heckler but might do shuttles/jumps time to time when my bighit isnt accessible.

I'm sure the XT's are as strong as most other brands cranks that are targeted at DH/FR specifically such as Holzfeller's etc. Shimano has the bucks to engineer better (lighter/stronger/more durable) products period.

I'll post some feedback once I get some riding time on my Enduro after I build it up.

P.S. Aaron, sorry for the slight hijack :D

Hmm... the fsa platinum pro looks good, but I may need a 128mm spindle. Checking out their website it didn't look like they offered that size.

You're not going to find anything light that has a 128mm spindle.

That size is gonna be DH-specific-stuff-only (ie, heavy) for ISIS bbs.

Well, for my $.03, I'd say anything from FSA, but primarily a Platinum Pro. I have a Platinum Pro Ti on the way (first try at a Ti spindle), but none of this is quite relevant because you need a 128. Sorry, this is for all the people that run normal-sized BB's. ;)
PS
Anyone know if I need a special lube for the junction between the Ti spindle and the aluminum cranks?

you need TI-prep inbetween the spindle and the crank interface. other wise you risk them seizing together forever. when ti and alum seive its all over. but most of the time ti bb's come with a little ti-prep

I ran an FSA platinum BB with no problem. Crank weight coming from FSAs Vdrive Extremes is where I am looking to save weight.

I am guessing the new XT setup mave have chainring tabs that might get in the way of mounting them up with a CG. I had to grind down my FSA V drive EXs to get it to clear on my 02 DHR with a 113 BB.

I am looking at some middleburns but not sure if there are any negaatives yet with chain guide setups ( E13 SRS ). That and Holzfeller's. I need 165's.

Dearest 911:

You are a dumb guy...here are the reasons why:

1. A light bottom bracket on a V10 is pretty much pointless, stop fretting over it you Gucci freak. You are going to feel 10x the difference in weight in the tires, wheels, and the 2lbs less in the frame (as compared to my v10).

2. You were climbing your DH9 up fromme like a madman, and I don't think the f'ing bottom bracket was really making a big difference. It was the motivation you had,
"This is the dumbest thing I've ever done, but I don't want to lose!!! MUST..KEEP...GOING..UPHILL...AS...FAST..AS...POSSIBLE."

3. If you rode with clips you'd get better acceleration and snap in each pedal stroke, which would more than make up for a heavy BB.

4. You should be worried about the bearings wearing out or the spindle cracking rather than the goddamn thing weighing too much.

So in conclusion, you should either buy my RF signature series BB or get the new Race Face Atlas cranks 'cause they are pimp.

Okay, for DH racing, that's a negative on the RF Atlas cranks. Not strong enough, not warrantied for DHing. But he's right about the BB weight. However, I am like you in that I do like to save weight wherever I can. Signature sounds good (weight dependant).
Supa8, those V-Drive Xtremes aren't heavy. But I guess that's coming from my kind of riding. If you're not freeriding/dhing, then they are on the heavy side. However, they're the lightest/weakest cranks I'd go with for my style. XC/trail stuff does weigh less though. That being said, the V-Drives weigh almost the same as my Holzfellers (I weighed them myself). That's why the V-Drives rock - pretty strong, light, cool, CHEAP. I only run Holzfellers because I got a screaming deal on a new pair.

Vdrives for the $ are great. I have been using them for a good year and half on my DH rig. Getting close to needing a new set of cranks so I have been looking at all the options.

Think I will pick up some Holzfellers this time around.

If you can afford Middleburns, get them. Or, buy my Holzfellers for a lot and I'll buy some Middleburns :p Did you have problam with the V-Drive Xtremes?

Low BB on my DHR plays havoc on cranks. I bent a set of VDrives at the pedal threads first week I had them ( pedal washers were in ). Got a new set but I am looking to try someting different this time. Also looking at the FSA Gravity cranks. I like the steel pedal insert. I amTaking the whole bike down this winter and upgrading as I go I guess.

How did you bend them at the pedal threads?

if you want crazy light, wait for external bb holzfeller's. f'ing rediculous
Agreed, but do you know for sure those are coming out? Those would be the T!TS.

As far as the Atlas cranks go for DH, look at Go-rides' Pro-Race build kit. I was just assuming that those guys know what they are doing...since most of them are pro or semi-pro.

Wow, you must be sponsored or something. My friends say I am good because I will be racing Sport next year and they think I am good enough to be sponsored. So how do I go about getting sponsored?

The only reason you'll be racing sport is because NORBA will screw up your license again like at Big Bear last year. It's OK champ...I'm sure you can cruise thru the finish on a friggin Schwinn pea picker with a sturmey-archer rear hub that doesn't really work, have crashed 3 times and still get at least second place.

Do the mystery holzfellers use an ISIS bb with external bearings or does it have a bonded bb spindle (a-la shimano, x-type)?

The GT Thing never went through. Stik wanted me on the team, but some of the suits higher up didn't want to listen to him. I'm sure something will pan out for next year.

Meh that sucks. I'm sure you'll find something besides you have a nice BCD and some clapped out tires and rims you can rock.

Caught both the tip of the crankarm and the pedal on a rock going sideways. It brought me to a dead stop and flipped me off the bike. Not only was my pedal destroyed the pedal end of the crank was bent inwards.

im not sponsored. i dont even race. i stole them. you are not good enough either. if you're only a sport rider, you are not good enough. if you cant do really really big jumps really fast, then you are not good enough. try again later.

i used a Truvativ max Ti and it lasted about half the season. it was light as stink, and held up well considering the conditions (see: rain every weekend) but im also a light guy, who rides reasonably smooth.

i liked it, shame it didn't last longer though.
