Lighter headset worth it?

Hi,

I run an FSA Pig in my Compo frame, basically because it came with the frame. Now, I run the same headset on my slalom bike, but I wonder if I should switch to something lighter on the Compo. Or should I just leave well enough alone, especially considering I'll only be saving a little over 50g? I'm trying to lighten the bike little-by-little, but I don't want to loose any reliability -- or spend too much $$.

I think I'd keep the Pig headset, for durability's sake.

If you want to shed weight, take a look at your wheels and tires. Got a heavy hub or rim? Maybe go for butted spokes (lighter, but stronger than straight gauge). Get ultralight tubes. Pick up some light handlebars, maybe your cranks are heavy.

Whatever you do, make sure the part is a durable one too. :)

Good luck!

You'd lose a tiny bit of weight for a lot of durability...lots of other things to replace before that, I'd think. Try a Ti bb spindle, some new crankarms maybe, or something like rims/tires?

Generally, though, I'd advise waiting till something needs replacing before upgrading if it's working well already... (tires always need replacing or upgrading, tho....:) )
