I'm running Maxxis Welterweights and riding a lot at Whistler. I've had two flats this year, both on the upper mountain in the rocks and I somehow managed to ding my rear rim on A-line a few times without flatting?! I'm running about 35psi in the rear. The front is still ghetto tubeless but I'll put a tube in when I change the tire.
It really depends on how you ride. Try a standard weight high volume tube (like the kenda xc) and if you flat it a bunch, start moving up in thickness. You probably won't need a full on DH tube if you don't have many rocks.
As long as you've got DH tires that are in good shape you can run just about any tube you want. I noticed that after about a season or so when my sidewalls started to get more beat that I would flat quite a bit more until I got new tires.
That said, I switched to ghetto tubeless about 2 years ago and haven't looked back.
I have a DH tube in the rear and a 2.2-2.5 in the front. Before that I had a 1.9-2.3 in the front and it held up OK, but the rear flatted. Gonna put another 2.2-2.5 in the rear and be done. I run right around 30, probably less in the rear. The added traction outweighs the weight gain, IMO.
I run Maxxis Ultralites in Minion 3c 2.5/2.7 at 35psi. I average 1-2 flats a year. I ride 10-15 days a year at Whistler. Ive used other tubes and the Maxxis tubes seem to work the best.
Any lite tube works fine for DH, as long as its the proper size. Run a 2.5 for a 2.5 2.35 for 2.35 ETC.....Good tires, talc between the tire and tube, life will be good. Currently I have your stock and standard 2.35-2.5 tubes in my 2.5 chunders, Talc'd the tubes first before installing them.... no worries at all. Been holding up great.
I use the regular 1.95-2.1 tubes for dh with maxxis 2.5 and 2.35 dual ply tires. I rarely flat, even riding rocks, though i'm 155lbs and fairly smooth.
Appr same as above, < 2.35 XC/AM tubes and Maxxis 2.5 fr and 2.35 rear. Runs 19-22 PSI and rarely flats. I'm 187 lbs and ride smooth according to my mate that flatted after 200 m on my bike (the 2006 DHR)
Rides everything from rocky to smooth terrain.
Ran Joes noFlats earlier this year but did not like it that much because the messy hassle when changing tires.
I have been riding thin wall tires - Shwalbe Big Betty 2.4 with Welterwieght Maxxis tubes... not a goor idea... 1 flat a day in the mountains :|
This season I finally deciced to use proper tires - Maxxis Minion 2.35 with Flyweight tubes. 1 flat during 2 weeks stay in Morzine on ca. 20-22PSI. So, definitelly works
