NiteRider, Lume and Light & Motion all make good HID lights, among other brands.
NR is local to San Diego, tend to be quite crash-worthy and work well. They have a medium width beam with a few rings. They use backpack and water-bottle cage batteries. It's possible to do walk-in warranty claims there.
Lume is in Encinitas, tend not to be super crash worthy, look like beautiful carbon/aluminum jewelry and have either a super-narrow or narrow (they call it "wide") beam. They use a super-trick carbon-aluminum battery pack that either straps onto the bike or goes in a camelbak. If you go to MTBR.com, you can get one for your price range in their Deals section. If you churn way down through the reviews of the Lume Strada, you can see 4 or 5 installments of my reviews/views on that product. Mail-in warranty work, only.
Light & Motion I don't know about crash worthiness, since the riders in my group with them haven't obliged that test, and they use the same bulb as a Lume. The beam pattern is wide and very smooth, and they use a strap-to-frame battery pack. They have two different battery kits, and the LiOn version is outside your price range.
