i have been know to ride w/o my helmet on occasion.

i generally ride with it, more so now that i found one i like

we all know the consequence if you slam hard.

just don't get in his situation.

taken from fly bike

he good news is that Jimmy has been progressing pretty well since
he came out his coma last week and sounds better each time I talk
to him on the phone. He has been transferred from the ICU at
Morristown Memorial Hospital to the JFK Brain Rehabilitation Institute
and is up, shuffling around and piecing his memory back together. It'll
be a long road to recovery but we are lucky that he is in the best
rehab center for his injuries and has great friends behind him.
The bad news is that Jimmy's insurance WILL NOT cover his rehab
program which he just checked into. The estimated total of the rehab
bills is estimated at $70,000 at least and that's coming out of his
family's pocket.

Does that get hot, or does the liner come out. And if it does, does it fit any differently? I've seen those onsale, but I thought it was more of a snowboarding helmet.

You realize he wasn't riding his bike right?

no, i actually didn't.

Some of you have heard by now that Jimmy Le Van got hurt this weekend in New jersey. Chad Shackelford fill us in.

November 3rd, we all flew into Newark for the Red Bull Down and Dirty contest in Asbury Park. The contest was on Sunday and went well. The next day Jimmy Levan, Aaron Ross, Chase Hawk, Wade Young, Jim Cielencki and myself went back up to Newark to start our 5 day east coast trip ahead. Our next stop was Wades friend, Tommy's house to drop off his car and start our trip. Our plan was to head into the city for the day to shoot some lifestyle and ride the Banks. While we were loading up at Tommy's, Jimmy and Chase were goofing off on the skateboard that Chase bought the previous weekend.

In front of Tommy's is a pretty serious hill, that's basically one giant S curve. The road is rough, covered in gravel and potholes. Jimmy walked up to the top as we were loading stuff up and started cruising down the hill. He bombed the whole thing first try, it was sick. We thought it would be rad to get a shot of him bombing it again. So, after we pulled the camera out and Jimmy got back to the top of the hill, we were ready to shoot. I need to stress how bad of a road this was. It was long, steep, and rough. Not too mention, Jimmy went about a 100 ft. higher up, than the first time.

I yelled out "Action!!!" and Jimmy started cruising down, he gave a little ollie, then a power-slide that sent him straight to a pretty rough tuck and roll. As usual, Jimmy got up laughing, knowing that he just got a hilarious clip. He grabbed the board and jogged back up to the top of the hill. Now ready to get the clip, he took off again. He gave another ollie and a couple of successful power-slides. At this time he was about to where we were standing, which was half way down the hill, He gave a "Shaka Bra" and started to pick up mad speed as he hit the steepest part of the hill. He was going about 20 mph and almost at the bottom of the hill. As he neared closer to the bottom, he got speed wobbles bad and that's when it all turned horrific. In the blink of an eye, Jimmy caught a bad wobble and the board shot out from under him, sending him directly to the back of his head, at again, about 20 mph. He immediately went limp. Chase, Wade and Jim C ran down to check on him, thinking that he just knocked himself out and he'd be up in a minute with a slight headache. I continued to stay up top shooting. Instantly, they realized what happened and flagged me down.

I ran as quickly as possible to the scene. When I got there, Jimmy was snoring. At this point it had been about 1.5 min, we started to worry. We tried to let him come up on his own, but then we realized he has bleeding and panicked. Wade was already on the phone with 911. He was out for around 3 mins and we started to really worry. The operator said the EMT's were on there way and they would be there soon, just hold tight and we'll be there. By this time Jimmy started to come to, completely disoriented. With no clue where he was, what day it was, what had happened, he tried to stand up and walk around. When he did this, we really saw how bad the exterior gash was.

We immediately tried to wrap his head in towels, but he was reluctant and kept taking them off. He made no sense, babbling about not being drunk and wanting to go back to the girls house, where were we at? I held him by the arm and walked him up to the house as he staggered alongside me. I got him to the top of the hill and sat him in a chair in front of Tommy's to wait for the Ambulance. Again, we kept pressure on his head, but he needed an ambulance. The police arrived and after, the EMT's arrived. They immediately started wrapping the exterior wound, which was about 2-3 inches long on the back of his head. They pulled out the stretcher and a neck brace, laid him on the stretcher and started to put on the neck brace. He immediately wasn't having it and resisted leaving the scene at all.

After sedating Jimmy, and an eventful trip to the hospital Jimmy got to the hospital and is getting the help he needs. He has a bruised brain and a fractured skull. Because of his injuries and history of being aggrevated when he comes out of anesthesia, He still remains in a drug induced coma, The doctors are confident that he will recover soon, but he will surely be in the hospital for at least a week.

Jimmy's sister and mom are with him in the hospital now.

We are hoping that Jimmy will be awake and coherent by the time we get back to jersey on Saturday evening. The most we all can do is stay positive and hope for the best.

Jimmy is one tough guy, who’s been through a lot. He will definitely pull out of this and continue on his legacy.

Get well soon friend, were all pulling for you.

I always have a hard time finding a lid to fit my big melon and they got a wide variety of sizing, I've been eyeballing them for the passed year or so.....

I hope jimmy pulls through this!

The whole helmet issue is so touchy...it's one of those "you'll never scratch it if you wear it" situations. Hell, I got AFLAC just cuz I figure I'll never use it if I pay for it...and that's cool with me! Let's see if it works.
Personally, I like gear. I like feeling like I just moved my injury limit back a few yards and can get a little closer to the edge...
But then it goes back to the point where you're gettin your shoes tied and start putting your lid on and realize that no one else is wearing it and you don't want to look like the special ed kid, even though 5 guys in helmets seems OK...?

i am THE only one at our park and DJ that wears a helmet.
it does look special ed but i don't care. my biggest fear is looping
out and not being able to catch myself and hitting the back of my
noggin.

I'm the only one at my park that wears a helmet as well. I know kids who have gotten serious concusions and they don't seem to see the connection with not wearing a helmet. It goes without saying that that you protect what is valuable to you. Anyone who thinks they can get concussions all their life without any consequences is sadly mistaken. Too many bmx'ers are caught up in the street image. Has anyone seen a street skater with a helmet? MTB is caught up in image as well, it just so happens that the image we are caught up in includes a TLD and a matching kit.

Oh and on another note, Gary Young had the same sort of head injury and it cost him 40k. I wonder if this could go on at an increasing rate for years before it would affect trends. Maybe New Era could produce a helmet with a flat bill and sticker so kids would actually wear one.

i agree helmets need to start being worn. about once every month some bmxr around here knocks himself out and then keeps riding sans helmet its stupid. i dont wear one all the time while riding street b/c most of the stuff around here is just not that big. these kids riding scooters (chainless, brakeless bikes) and brakeless in general are just begging to go down HARD

seems like when private skateparks are strict about requiring them, then everybody gets one and it's no big deal.

bern lids are the sh*t! I've been using a brentwood going on 2 years now and I don't think i'll ever use another "skate" helmet. They are extremely comfortable, they fit my big head and they are very light. I have had 11 concussions in the past so you'll never catch me without a helmet. if you google bern you should be able to find a few online retailers.

Yeah, I'm sure he is kicking himself for having to get a huge bill to come to the conclusion that a helmet isn't a bad idea. It cracks me up when riders have knee pads on and no helmet. Exactly what are you saying about the value of your noggin? Nothing agains Jimmy being that I don't know him, but if you are in an accident due to your choice not to wear a helmet I don't see how you deserve to have a fund donating money to your hospital bills. If I choose to drink a fifth a night I'm not going to ask for money so I can get a liver transplant in 6 years. If people can't see the direct link between cause and effect then maybe a vasectomy is in order. I feel the same way about Harley riders who live their rebellion through conformity of dress, appearance, ideology, and idiotic notions that you can die with a helmet or without a helmet so why bother. This is a rant no doubt, but I don't think an uncalled for one.

And now Gary Young always wears a helmet.
