Lock-on alternatives?

So about a week ago I read the post about the guy who broke his ODI grip-tabs off and as a result broke his back, and that got me thinking. I searched for the thread, but couldn't find it again, so I hope everyone read it. It seems we're putting our lives in the hands of 4 tiny plastic tabs, which have been known to break off at the worst times. Quite a few people had replied saying the same thing had happened to them (the broken grips, not the broken back).

Check out the Feb. Decline mag, RMX review: looks like RMB custom non-odi "lock-ons". No info at www.bikes.com though.

Any other ideas? (other than wires/zip-ties/glue)
Thanks

Haha, Lock on grips are a god send in my opinion. I use the Oury lock ons, and am very happy. I was never a fan of the ODI ones. Just make sure its tight, and dont strip out the bolt threads, which is pretty easy. just my opin..

oh yeah, try not to wreck.

i trust lock ons more than glue just make sure they are tight before every ride and your set when i had glue grips they tended to like to twist....

I hope you don't take offense but it sounds like to me that you're fishing for an excuse to try something new. Lock on's been treating me right since the beginning and I've never heard of those tabs breaking...plus it seems to me that if they did...you's till have enough clamping pressure via the aluminium collars to hold the grip on the bar and if not seems like you'd feel that it was loose.

BS about the broken back. And about the rocky mountain lock-ons......they suck. The plastic pieces on the end arent in the same plane as the grip, they stick up alot...feel like crap.

I love lock-ons cause it freed us from glue, hairspray and bailing wire. I would trust 2 aluminum clamps of a single piece of plastic any day.
Both the grips you linked to only have one clamp which means you still have to worry about the inboard end of the grip twisting. No thanks.

Yeah, i think that's just and e-rumor....if there was a problem with them breaking it would be pretty well know...i bet lock-on grips are on of, if not the most commonly used DH parts on the market. I'd say at least 75% of the bikes have them on then on any given race i've been at lately...i've got them on all my bikes and never had problem....I'd be more worried about a bar failure than the grips.

This must have happened, like corey@nsmb.com said there. I trust them for now for 2 years on my bike(s), and never had problems with them.

That sounds very reasonable.

How old are the grips? You probably torqued them when you landed such a big jump, and perhaps previously fatigued grips failed. But, if you landed that hard, the odds are that any grip would have rotated on you, and you still would have wiped. Glad you are healing!

i've had one of the tabs break, that's one out of 4 tabs on the grip. still held in place just fine, i rode it for a couple more months then replaced it when the grip was worn out.

yea same here, i was thinking this person might have been riding a grip with a broken tab for long and then broken the other one, happens sometimes when you crash and hit the grip directly that you break one tab, but two, i realy cant see that happening from a crash at least.

yea i've had just one part of the grip be broken and not notice until i take them off for repair of the shifters or something.
sometimes the little tabs wear down, so i take off the metal clamps and fill it full of clue. it ain't movin, and it one of the tabs breaks its clued to the metal part.
still able to slide off the grip from the bar no problem.

I've never had any issues. I remember once they were slightly loose to the point where I could twist the grip on the bar but that was it. Just retightened. I like the second grip idea from the first post. One big allen bolt.

Maintenance is often over looked on many bikes. I wouldn't be suprised if a lot of lock-on grips were over or under tightened then never checked after the initial install.

that's a helluva crash! glad to hear the guy is recovering ok.

if every part that broke and caused a crash required an alternative, we wouldn't be riding bikes anymore. sometimes things fail. i bet if this guys handlebar had snapped he wouldn't be looking for an alternative to using a handlebar that was only clamped in the center

i broke one of the tabs off some how. when i took the grip off the lockring fell to the ground. the grip was giving me a warning however it had a little bit of play in it i always refered to it as throttle grip. i will stick with then they rock. (knock on wood)

I always seem to have the opposite problem. I can't get the lock-ons OFF the bike. I unscrew the bolts just fine, and then I can't even get the grip to even move a little bit with a pair of channel locks. I've destroyed 4 grips so far just so I can save a handlebar. 40$ down the drain.

So, you wondering maybe why they won't come off? SALT. My sweat works it's way underneath, corrodes the aluminum and salt builds up under the plastic. The tolerances become so tight, that nothing will move and it has the same effect as if I had glued them on the bar.
GROSS.

Ever considered wearing gloves. ?? They sook up alot sweat. You can't sweat that much thru a glove , that it will corrode your alu lockons.

And even that sounds weird to me, because alu can;t corrode if the protectionlayer of the alu is'nt removed. They are just stuck because of all the salt from sweat built up under it. Even that sounds really weird to me. And i have been riding for 14 years now. Sand or mud sounds more reasonble to me, to get under it,(with normal grips.)

Dude...
1. My friends won't shake my hand after a ride, they wait for me to dry off.

2. I lost (and I am in no way exaggerating this) 2.5 lbs after a 50 min run one time. I think that's like a liter of water or something.

3. I can't hold onto the bike WITHOUT gloves, cause they just slip off.

4. Trust me, it gets through teh annodized finish, cause when I wipe it off, there are silver patches when it used to be black. And oh yeah,

5. I rusted through a Fox spring one time. I was bouncing around on my bullit and *CRACK* I see a spark. Half of the metal in theat area was corroded.

6. I called up Stratos and told them my spring was rusting, and they wouldn't belive me. I said, "no,no it's really rusting trust me." They told me to wipe it down with a SOS pad or something like that and it didn't work. "Nothing will get through that nickel finish." Yea right.

I get a pic of the bars for you, you'll see. I'm going to have to grease my lock-ons from now on.

I run metal bar ends, even if the grip came completely loose they'd still stay on the bar. I think that guy just slipped off the bar and sh!t broke when the bike was all wadded up after the fall.

I am running something similiar.

I have aluminum bar end plugs on my bikes to protect the bars and grips. They are the same hieght as the lock on collars and would stop any chance of the grip coming off. I guess it "could" get as bad as to spin freely on teh bar but it won't come off.

When I was like 10yo I was zig-zagging some "turttle" markers on the side of the road and going at a decent pace and my grip slipped off with an audible "POP" and I spent the next 15minutes picking gravel out of my forearms and cheek. :mumble: Lock-ons are all I run.

I like the Intense version with a half flange on the inboard side....I guess it is a hold over from my motorcycle days.

Have you tried soaking it in water?

Or maybe Vinegar?

I believe ya, the salt acts as a catalyst to speed up the oxidation of the aluminum.

Vinegar might work to get them off....

I know a roadie who's frames are ruined after about a season because he literally sweats through them. the top of the top tube gets stripped of paint and corroded from sweat dripping onto it. some people just have toxic sweat.

Ive broken proballly about 4-5 tabs in my life time. Ive given up on lockons for my hardtail. Regular grips seem to hold up better. But for my DH bike.. they are staying forever, I ride in the rain and mud alot and they are almost needed.

He must like to show that off, because he could either put something on the tube or clean it off after he is done riding  :dead:

Yeah no problem, get me a couple of 2 liter gatorades (Xtremo Tropical Intenso) and portable Dance-Dance-Revolution pad hooked up to a gameboy and give me about 3 hrs.

I'll try vinegar, but I really need something that will penetrate. I bet if I used WD-40 or some CLR or something that might work too. Citrus degreaser didn't touch the stuff.
I had some dangerboy bar-ends that took me 30mins each to take off. It was ridiculous, and they're ruined now!!! They were really nice too. Those will keep everything locked in place very well, even without toxic sweat.

one thing to think about even if the tabs do break off the grip will not fall off the bike because on the clamps. also if you mtn bike alot you most likely have strong forarms and you would be able to notice and us that strenght atleast until you could stop! this would result in really tied forarms but would avoid breaking your back. it just doesn't seem like that senario would happen to me.
