Hey all

I have more tires and wheels than I know what to do with. I have a lot of space available in my garage to work with for building some kind of rack system. I just want these tires and wheels to be organized and up out of the way.

Any ideas?

Post up some pictures of what you guys have done!

Thanks

One idea that seems to work well at the shop for us was to drill some 1" holes at a slight angle in a 2 x 4. Bolted the 2x4 to the wall and inserted ~3' sections of 1" dowel rods in the holes. If you want a little added protection, wrap some tape or foam on the dowel rods. Each dowel holds ~30 non-built XC rims or 8-10 built wheels. The same system works well for wire bead tires but not so well for kevlar beads, they tend to twist up. For now the kevlar tires are stacked vertically in a corner. At any given time there are upwards of 300 rims, 50-60 built wheels, and 100's of tires around the shop with floor space at a premium and this system has been working for about a year so far.

get a bunch of pvc pipe and fittings and make a rack. I'm actually building a rack like that as we speak for work. I'm just pushing the fittngs together and securing them with a plastite screw so I can take it apart in the future if I change my mind. I don't have any pictures but I'm sure you get the idea.

You could get a bunch of those vinyl coated hooks and screw them into a 2x4 and hang that, or just put the hooks into the ceiling, just be sure not to put anything heavier than a few pounds on on them. I've seen that done in a lot of shops. For convenience you can tape the front and rear tires together (if your picky like that) so you don't have to search through them all to find the "pair."

You can figure out all that wacky frame design stuff, yet cant figure a way to keep tires and wheels??? SHEESH.... there goes my perception..... :) :D

I just put a bunch of nails in between my rafters to hang single wheels, and i have some shelf brakets to hang tires and loose rims from. Sorry its not some fancy machine that auto categorizes according to tire size and wear level...... just plain and simple nails screws, and spare shelf brackets.....

I hang my DH bike from hooks like that, into a 2x4 nailed to the rafters. My old 50+ lb scream even! Never had a prob....

get one friend to stand on them while you zip tie them all togethter with industrial zip ties, and then figure out a way to attatch them to your ceiling.

You can get square hooks, about 4" wide, they're good for 3 wheels per hook. But even then, it's not the best system. Horizontal rods work the best in shops, so they should be the best for home too.

It also depends on what kind of access you want to the tires. I mean, if you don't mind digging through 10-15 tires to get the one you want, mass storage on a strong compression rod between two walls or a wall and a table works great. Compression rods are fairly cheap and can be adjusted to fit a wide variety of spaces. They work for wheels too.

If you have a "quick access" wheelset or set of tires, maybe an urban wheelset that you swap out a lot, I really like those nylon coated screw-in hooks. Mine are probably 5-6" long and hold one wheelset or two tires. You can buy longer ones if you have a wheelset with tires on it - I'm not sure it'd fit well on the hooks I have.

dave,

2 easiest methods...Coat roads and tires strung on rods. Thsi is what i do and it works well, but it sa pain to get 30+ tires off a rack..read: HEAVY.

The other great solution is an upright rack. Get a little moving dolly (square wood thing, with 4 wheels). Then connect 4 upright 8ft 2.4s. Make a nice square to solidify it at the top. Tires squeeze right into the square and are all organized like.

Throw 'em out and give 'em away. I've never been able to figure out why we all (myself included) hold on to so many old tires.

Another solution: build a sh*t-tastic shed like I've got behind the house and fill that baby up to the brim. :)
