if you are shooting that high a resolution, most likely you are tethered to a computer, so you are studio-shooting. very limited audience, as far as i can tell.
It'll out resolve 4x5 and MF any day (a 1dsmk2 can outresolve MF). I'd say it'd fall just short of large format stuff, which is pretty damn impressive considering a MF digi back runs about $25-30k.
BTW you can interpolate up with an 8mp camera and easily out resolve 35mm.
Chances are it has it's own HDD or something in it. Although, you coudl probably get 8 shots from it on a 1gb card, not like you will be panning with it or anything.
not that i have any experience w/ this sort of stuff, but a friend of mine is a commerical photog and shoots w/ a hassy/leaf combo...i think the back is 32MP and to shoot he's got a cable from camera to computer, just for speed and storage reasons.

A digi back will usually record to a card WAY faster than to a computer via firewire. Studio guys do that so that they can checking lighting, exposure etc on a real screen. Those digi back LCDs are notoriously bad (not like the canon ones are any better though).
It can be tethered to a mac mini via gigabit ethernet (runs without power I guess, ):
A 6x17 digital panorama (uncompressed) has about 950 MB. To process and store such large amounts of data we have created a state-of-the-art computer system. Data is transferred by gigabit ethernet from the sensor to the storage device.
The portable storage device is a computer in itself with most advanced characteristics in processing, disk space and memory. Additionally, the camera and handheld control unit take advantage of the latest IP network technology, making it possible to connect the camera to a network and control it remotely.
OK I talked to a guy who just got back from Photokina today, and he ordered one of those cameras. Appearently the Mac Mini has a little powerpack in the case with it, and is designed to be a portable harddrive only. The digital back can be adapted to most MF or LF bodies with an aluminum spacer, and it produces beutiful files. Anyway it is as good as we thought it would be, and in about a month when he gets it in, he's allready agreed to leting me use it for a few days in exchange for letting him borrow my 400, so I now just need fo think of something worthy of a 6x17 chip to take a picture of.
