Well I have yet to see my storm get on a 3g network, it is always 1XEV coverage
EVDO is 3G (available long before other US providers). The Storm supports the latest rev A EVDO and GSM's 3G networks (you will get a 3G symbol rather than 1XEV when roaming off traditional (ie Verizon, Sprint, Bell, etc ) CDMA networks. Technically all 3G networks are CDMA based - GSM was inferior.

1xEV-DO

(EV-DO)

Part of a family of CDMA2000 1x digital wireless standards. 1xEV-DO is a "3G" CDMA standard. EV-DO originally stood for "EVolution, Data-Only", but recently is also referred to as "EVolution, Data-Optimized".

EV-DO provides data rates over 10 times faster than 1xRTT, the previous data technology for CDMA networks.

Unlike other "1x" standards, EV-DO only addresses data - not voice. It requires a dedicated slice of spectrum, separate from voice networks using standards such as 1xRTT.

There are currently two main versions of 1xEV-DO: "Release 0" and "Revision A".

Release 0 is the original version, and the first to be widely deployed. Rel. 0 offers data rates up to 2.4 mbps, averaging 300-600 kbps in the real world. This is much faster than the 50-80 kbps typically offered by 1xRTT technology. Rel. 0 data rates are identical to 1xEV-DV Revision C.

Revision A integrates most of the faster data technology from 1xEV-DO Revision D, and improves latency. These enhancements allow features such as VoIP and video calling.

Although EV-DO does not include voice capability natively, Rev. A is fast enough to support VoIP technology at service levels equal or better to 1xRTT voice technology. This may be a future upgrade path for CDMA carriers if EV-DV development remains stalled.

In terms of data speed and general technology evolution, the closest equivalent to EVDO for GSM/WCDMA networks would be HSDPA.

1xEV-DO is based on a technology initially known as "HDR" (High Data Rate) or "HRPD" (High Rate Packet Data), developed by Qualcomm. The international standard is known as IS-856.

The storm is ok, I do miss the physical keyboard from my old blackberry but I am getting better each day.

The higher res, size and ease of navigation of the porn I look at makes up for the $hitty keyboard. :brows:
The only reason I'm considering the storm is b/c it has that psuedo physical keyboard, the screen clicks or something. Tho I'm not sure if that will provide ample tactile feedback for my big sausage fingers.

Another thing that concerns me, is that the OS on the storm is the same as the one on all other current BB's. IE it's not an OS design around a touchscreen input.

The entire screen is one big f^cking button, that is what clicks. I can type on it pretty well, the feed back is nice.

The RIM platform has always been about apps including third party so you can usually get what you are looking for even if RIM's applications aren't appealing to you. For example, Opera Mini works just as well as Safari does on the iPhone.

Palm Pre looks nice if you can tolerate Sprint, a first revision device (though so is the Storm in a way for RIM), and waiting until the Spring.

yea, not crazy about sprint. sticking with verizon. I have heard good things about the HTC so that one is def on my list. Its not as big, but the face is more or less full screen with a slide out keyboard.

Can you elaborate more?
it sometimes doesnt always respond to moving around the menu's, and even though this processor is a ton faster than my HTC 8125, it sometimes take two seconds to move b/w features....i know two seconds isnt a lot, but my slower processor 8125 didnt do that, and i want sht to get done asap. its because of HTC's Touch Flo.
im dl'ing a hack firmware which will hopefully resolve this

it also is a bit quirky switching from the different menus when the keyboard slides open. its hard to explain really. ill show you this weekend what im talking about

great phone otherwise. it takes great pics, but the autofocus takes foreevveerrr..the firmware hacks fixes that tho

if there were more apps for WiMo, then this would be t!ts

RIM's network sucks...why would he continue to use it?
RIM's BIS solution is best for personal email despite some recent infrastructure problems, even the iPhone still lacks any push notification.

BES is even better and I assume that's what he's using.

yeah i was mainly talking about their "infrastructure" and not so much about push or they email capabilities.

its one thing to be on a cdma or gsm network, but arent they still on their own network?

RIM has servers for BIS and BES service routing at various locations in the world for cellular providers that offer their products. Its security is better than most other wireless devices as government and business use as been its core market until recently. Its been rock solid (I've been using them at work since 03 in addition to Palm, WM, and OSX devices I've also supported) until a few hiccups due to the big growth in popularity the last year or so (though I've seen more infrastructure problems with ATT data network than RIM based problems - that's why we stopped using ATT). You always have the ability to use third party apps for mail too (yahoo, google, or POP/IMAP/etc) and newer devices have wifi if you don't want to use BIS/BES or want a backup.

hey, any updates? Have you stuck with it or cashed it in for a physical keyboard? If you kept it, do you eventually get used to it? How fast can you type compared to a phone w/ a physical keyboard?

I was at the Verizon store yesterday playing with one, and while it is nice to have the tactile feedback, it definitely would take some getting used to (you gotta press it harder than I was expecting). Although I'm not sure that this implementation of it is the best route (granted it's only the first).

Yeah I still have the storm, it is ok. I am getting a little bit better on it.

I would not say that typing is any slower than my old blackberry, I just make more mistakes now. I want a 'U' but I get a 'Y'. The ones in the store are always delayed and f'ed up pretty good, mine is a lot quicker than those.

good to know.

I was browsing some reviews this morning and apparently Apple offered the iPhone to Verizon and they passed (huge blunder). I should bring this up when I go in to talk to them and should see if they give me a discount for staying with Verizon instead of going to AT&T to get the phone I *should* have been able to get through Verizon if their corporate leaders weren't a bunch of asshats.

Storms are $99 on Amazon or $199 for two at the Verizon store.

Well it looks like I'm getting yet another Blackberry.

For those keeping track, this will be my third one. Mine is overheating like a sum'bitch.

While I like how it works, I'm not sure I'd recommend the Blackberry Bold...

So I got my replacement yesterday (yet another remanufactured unit)

Same effing problem

The battery was on charge all night long. It has drained to nothing in 3 hours. and it's hot to the touch.

Ridiculous.

Don't get a blackberry bold

That BITCH!!!!

I went through a 45 min OS upgrade with Rogers. We'll see if that helps.

He also recommended I try the Bolt browser for the Bold. Supposedly fast. I'm not seeing a big improvement so far...

Actually, when the smoke clears what you are going to find out is that Blackberries, like people, just hate Mmike.
Not surprising considering they are called smartphones.

Blackberry:
"Oh crap, here comes peckerwood, let me heat myself up and try to burn his hand."

sissssssssst

Mmike:
"Arrrgggghhhh" (shakes hand and head simultaneously)
