I'm pissed.

Over the last several months many of you have made the lounge a hostile, unfriendly, and generally crappy place to be.

Here's what I'm going to do about it:

If you make a post that:

- is hostile
- is intentionally inflammatory
- contains vulgarity, or content that wouldn't get into a PG-13 movie
- links to any of the afore mentioned content
- rubs me the wrong way

You will receive an immediate, non-negotiable one month ban.

The second violation results in a permanent ban.

No more intimidating newbs, photoshopping every single picture posted to make fun of people, ______ sucks, I hate ______, etc.

There will be no negotiations, banning decisions are permanent.

I don't caren who you are, how long you've been here, or if you're joking, drunk, high, or generally retarded, break the rules and pay the price. I don't care what your intentions were, this is an online forum and if you think something can be interpreted badly then don't post it.

If anyone sees a post from this point on that applies PM me a link immediately.

Yep, this is now fully a dictatorship. We tried democracy, but some of you are too immature and/or dense to use that privilege responsibly.

This place used to be positive, constructive, and friendly, and it's going to be that way again or I have no reason to keep it open.

may i make a suggestion.............on a site that i live on they were having the same problem, so the mod created a place that was no-holds barred called DDSplayground (named after yours truely), you could do this and let the monkeys fling all of thier poop in there and that way the n00bs like me are safe

Thanks for the suggestion, but it won't be necessary. If members can't treat people with the same respect on here as they would in person then I'm not interested in having them as members.

There was discussion about having a "sandbox" a couple of years ago, and basically it was decided against because some of the site advertisers have guidelines for what content they will advertise on. If the advertisers go, bye bye site.

would you consider getting rid of the lounge for a month or so? The people who are only here for the "banter" will get bored and leave, then when the Lounge comes back, keep it clean and friendly from the beginning.

I run a site similar to RM for local rides. We have WAAAAAY less traffic than you do (and thus, waaaay lower costs), but I've chosen to not have an off-topic area because of the crap that happens here. I'm sure it can be done effectively, but I don't have the time or the patients to. Because of that, I give you a lot of credit for being as patient with it as you have been, and all the "policing" you have to do.

Regardless, I approve (for whatever that's worth to you) of the dictatorship aproach.

Yeah, well, there actually was a "sandbox forum" in the form of The Forum Whose Name We Do Not Speak. It was pretty fun for a while but ended up getting repetitive and BeerDemon killed it after a while to make sure the advertisers didn't get in a tizzy.

One suggestion I've made in the past was to move the lounge down further on the list. Less visibility and all that.

I have noticed that for the most part people keep it serious in the bike forums.

I am going to aim to de-emphasize the Lounge, but I don't think I want to remove it completely since I think the off topic stuff will just contaminate other forums.

I agree. I do tend to not post stupid things in the other forums. I try to be helpful there.

Hummm? What's the idea behind doing that?

The Lounge and the DH Fourm are by far the most active.

There is a lot of interesting general info that floats around the Lounge along with the other junk.

Word, RM is right. Get rid of the bad apples and the rest of the orchard will grow fine.

The idea behind that is that this is a mountain biking site, and people tend to behave on here when they're talking about mountain biking.

I'm not getting rid of the lounge, but I'm taking it out of the spotlight. There are too many members here who seemingly ONLY visit the lounge.

I approve, of this action. This is a great site, but some of the negative banter in the forum has turned people who in general, are not aggressive, into aggressive folks. Whether their actions are used to retaliate, save face, or just to call someone on their being rude to others, it isn't productive.

Thank you for implementing some rules that WILL help return the fun factor to RM's lounge!

Approval sent!
thanks

As a newb to both mountain biking and this site, I have to say I like The Lounge, but have to admit that some of the poop slinging has gone overboard. Here's to off-topic banter that is fun but still respectful.

back when you started the thread about what to do to make r.m. better.
the first thing i thought of was, get rid of the lounge.
it's rarely ever about cycling. and there are countless numbers of forums out in the www. world that have all the mindless chatter and vicious replies you could ask for.
and you have a bunch of "regulars" here who are sitting like vultures waiting to pounce on any word spoken by someone who is outside of their little circle.

none of us are innocent of responding from time to time with a little e-hate. but others seem to only operate in that manner.
and when someone here posts something that you have knowledge or opinion one way or another about, the last thing you want to deal with are the ones who take the time to dissect your response piece by piece, and throw it back in your face.

it gets old real fast. especially when it's something they wouldn't dare say to you in person.

let's hope your thread here works, and the lounge can have a semblance of civilty.

Id like to chime in and say that RM's lounge is truly what makes it stand out from all of the other sites out there. I recognize that I may be part of the problem, and Ill do my best to cool it, but I really love how this place can make a fool of anyone (ie. Mr. Clean) who bullies their way around other internet forums. The population here is pretty thick skinned and pretty intelligent, and Im glad to be a part of it.

This is good news

I've been more of a lurker than a poster for the past few years, but really enjoy The Lounge and many of the other forum areas and slowly starting to participate more. Here's to bringing back more positive vibes and keeping this a great community! :thumb:

I agree that getting rid of the Lounge would be a poor choice. I would spend a lot less time here if it were removed.

I think the off-topic conversation is great and even a lot of the ribbing is funny and good natured. It's just gone a bit overboard in the past several months. Hopefully people will cool it and the Lounge will go back to being an enjoyable place to banter.

It's like a parent raising their voice to a child. There are different tones of anger, and it sounds like Adam is near the top. I have a feeling he wants The Lounge (and the rest of the site) to remain fun, but if the asshats in question threaten a current or potential advertiser from being here, your post count or rep don't mean crap. You know who you are!

Yes, I know that includes me.

Exactly BV. It's pretty simple really.

If you don't like user xxx, ignore him. If user xxx makes enough of an ass of himself, he will earn a well deserved 30 day vacation. People who choose to engage in stupid arguements with user xxx in a bunch of threads, will join him on his 30 day vacation.

If someone starts a thread that says "User xxx sucks!" or the like, user xxx has a choice: let the mods take appropriate action, or jump in and defend himself with a bunch of asshat posts and earn some appropriate action against himself.

Smart monkeys will quickly realize that the ignore feature is more enjoyable than the 30 day vacation feature.
