I have an 03 sherman that supposedly has a somewhat of a lock down but as usual it does not work. Has anyone else had this problem and if so any ideas how to fix it. Besides replacment of the fork.
I had a sherman breakout and the adjust "didnt work" but all that had to be done was take off the cap and look under it and fiddle then put it back on, works good as new.
I have an '04 with the 150mm-110mm. I was told not to ride hard in the 110mm position as it's just for climbing and not for hard hits. If you hit hard with it locked down it can break the lockdown.
Rebuilding a Sherman is pretty damn easy, however, you don't necessarily need to do so. Take off the Travel Adjust knob and rotate it a little bit, and reinstall. Do that until it works again.
If you need to rebuild it you can download the instructions from Manitou's website.
sounds like a plan i wil try it but i was also thinking of the nixon platnium instead or maybe the fox 36 rlc but the pocket will determin that as well as the boss my wife that is
The lock down in that fork is a simple mechanical catch working off of the spring. The adjuster knob actually turns the spring (the end crimp/hole on the spring is not round) by fitting into the end of the spring. when the spring is turned, it activates a latch or catch that hooks the spring and keeps it in a compressed state.
(it has been several years since I have been inside this fork..so I am a little hazy with exact detail)
The knob can simply have come out of the spring, or just be clocked incorrectly, or worst case scenario is the fork has been ridden hard in the short position and the catch has broken. In any case, that leg is quit simple to pull apart and diagnose.
The good think is, as bad as manitou is at quality control, bobby in warranty is even better.
a friend of mine has the sherman firefly, with lockout, and his is a POS...thing's been rebuilt twice in the past year, and he doesnt ride the smoothest, but geez. I think manipoo must have issues with those forks and lockout. I have the sherman slider, dual crown, no lockout. never given me a hint of trouble. From personal experience, the manitou forks arent any worse to rebuild than anything else. I rebuilt a minute 3 a couple months back, only problem was them sending the wrong internal parts to our shop, then having to send them back, etc. but once we got the right stuff, no big deal. I thought it was actually easier than the fox float 100 I just did. Fox's tech support was kinda rude and acted like I was stupid for double checking something that wasnt clear in the tech manual.
