Can't remember where I seen it. But it said Mammoth mtn was bring back the Kamakazee downhill for the Nationals. Does that mean the National finals are going to be basically a fireroad run? Anybody know any info on the Course?

Just saw the thread about the Kamakazee below. Never ridden the course myself. I understand a big chainring is best. Any other setup tips? I'm on a Turner DHR. Seems like it might be overkill. Tires? I currently running a Timberwolf in the back and a Mich Comp 32 in the front which is an awesome combo at Big Bear, but might be a little to knobby for Mammoth. I have Minions and Mich Comp 24's i could run if needed. All opinions appreciated

Those caliper brakes must be in the form of Magura yellow oh and a Judy DH fork will be required as well

the Kamikaze is just another event being held at the same time to add a little old school flavor, same as a few years ago. the regular dh races will be on a different course

I had that Kamakaze video for a long time and finally gave it away. It was more of a documentary than a video but I wish I still had it - a real piece of cycling history.

And BTW, the coolest part was not the wheels or the brakes, it was the bondage suits to cut down on drag!

Yay I was scared the only DH would be Kamikaze. It is a rad trail but not for DH racing in '04. I hear they're building a new DH trail for the National Finals.

I just spent a week up there in Mammoth. Talking to the bike park crew they said Upper Velocity, which wasn't open yet will be used for the downhill. The Kamikaze will be an open event. Not much has changed on it, it was about 3.5 miles, just over 2100' drop, steep fireroad, lots of loose pumice with scattered rocks. Bring a huge chain ring and serious brakes. It would be easy to hit 50-60 mph on sections if you choose.

That is all me....

Me on Spring Break....

*edit* I found an old post on MTBR and I guess I did teh course in 5m 45sec. If the course is 3.5 miles long that means I averaged only about 36.5 miles an hour. :( I thought the course was 4 miles long...making my average about 42 with the same time......oh well. I will take the 36.5mph. :o:

As for the Kama... how cool it's an 'open' event that anyone can race! Way cool to see them bring a little 'old school' into the first US National Championships. Like a bit of Americana... fresh.

It was a blast when they brought it back for the 2000 national finals. I thuroughly enjoyed the 20 drive and heat and sunburn and drama that went a long with it.

I rode (nay raced) the legend that is the Mammoth Kamikaze Dh course. The same course I had stared at and drooled for over 7 years during and after college. It was the best summer riding trip of my life.

It was strange being up against all ages for the Beginner class....but was still a blast. It was fun to see them bring out the big rings and take off the visors...actually I think it was still the "in" thing to do then.

If anyone is going there and is curious....do it if you can. Pedal till your eyes cross and become numb to the sensation you are floating at 40-50+ mph over pumice the texture of kitty litter. It is a unique experience.

Rhino gives it 2 :thumb:

Well, :think:ing... 60 minutes in an hour/4.77 minute race run = a multiplier of 12.59 x 3.5 miles = 44.03mph average, right?

Purdy ran a 4:35 or about 4.58 minutes so 60/4.58x3.5= 45.85mph average, I think.
