THE seismic jolt that unleashed the deadly Solomons tsunami last week lifted an entire island metres out of the sea.

The earthquake also , destroyed some of the world's most pristine coral reefs.

In an instant, the grinding of the Earth's tectonic plates in the 8.0 magnitude earthquake Monday forced the island of Ranongga up three metres.

and to think, i get sh!t constantly for being fascinated with what people call the "slow" science. all i got to say is some things move a bit more quickly than people give them credit for. wikipedia "pseudotachylite" and realize that, according thermodynamics, the plate/fault movement must occur supersonically.
