well coming back from the exploded arm finally went to the dirt jumps. let me preface this by saying i have been riding some erbon lately and trails and feel like im almost 100% in those categories. So anyway i go to the dirt jumps get out there and sit down on my bike. immediately i get a strange feeling about it but i figure im just going to have to overcome some mental block. The problem was though that i couldnt get myself to get any air, i was petrified. i would go into the jump and just kinda pop off the lip and land in the middle of the first jump which is a table top. I know that i can dirt jump, i have dirt jumped a lot, but i just could not make myself do it that day. anyone ever experienced a mentaal block that is that selective before?hell i didnt even break it dirt jumping.

I'm still getting over drops from 2 stupid crashes. The second one was even a jump. I don't jump big, but pop off of little stuff. Drops still own me. :(

i dis that on all my practice runs at the last dh race i went to. we got there a day early so i could practice all day. i don't know if i was tired or what but i just couldnt do anything. every little thing was creeping me out. i was on my bullit for the first time which had me a little shaken up but i just totally pussed out. had a bunch of the other women feeling pretty good about the race the next day probably. the day of the race i nailed everything that had creeped me out on my first practice run though. everything went really smoothly. my hang ups in biking are totally mental. if i could get over those blocks, i would be a much better rider.

it was so strange i hadnt ever experienced mental anguish like that as far as riding goes. i think im a decent rider i just had this strange thing going on.i was frustrated with myself. i went out the next day with my big bike (i was on my new hardtail the day i got shut down) and started hitting some of the doubles so there was a little bit of retribution for the day before but damn it was strange.

I had the same problem when I broke my arm by going OTB. When I finally got back on the bike I found I was hesitant to ride anything technical. It took me going OTB again without getting hurt to overcome the fear.

I'm not telling you to go wreck again. I'm just saying that once you pull it off without injury, you'll be back up to your old form.

Wet rocks spook my. Everytime I have hurt myself on the bike a wet rock is to be blamed. Rock gardens I laugh at when dry are a chore for me even when slightly damp.

Word - I had plenty of trouble on climbs with damp rocks Saturday. Made stuff I usually don't and just fell off on places that have been chalked up for a couple of years. As wumpus call them DGR (damn green rocks). :mumble:

I've never felt comfortable at the dirt jumps to begin with - anything with a real tight tranny makes me exceedingly nervous (I attribute this to always being the Guinea Pig as a kid and getting chucked a bit hard a few times) - A bit of fear is good though - didn't you just get back on the bike about 3 weeks ago? Better to be a bit nervous the first time (dirtjumping) than to go back out and stack hard before your arm is re-accustomed to riding. It'll come back - just don't let it screw with you if you aren't yet comfortable doing something yet.

The DGR's never used to bother me, then I tried a swampthing as a front tire. Great in mud but it seems maxxis has discovered a truly frictionless interface with that tire and solid rock. They should use the combination in fork bushings.

well, i like to hear em beg ya know!

yeah it was just shocking since i was not reserved about any other kind of riding i figured dirt jumping would be the same. I guess after catastrophic failure of the arm though there will need to be some mental recovery.

i had never broken a bone til last winter and even then i only broke my finger and i wasnt riding when i did it, but for a while after that i was too scared to try anything remotely large (>4 feet on the street, or getting any real air dirtjumping)

it goes away after a while...

I broke my hand last year on a slippery, banked stunt......front end went right out from under me. Off the bike for awhile, and when I got back on, I was chicken-of-the-sea. I didn't want anyone to know how frightened I was of doing stuff like that again, and I kept it to myself. The fear ate me up quite a bit inside and I didn't know how to mentally stabilize myself. I was real tentative for about two months------know why? I was afraid of crashing. In my mind, I equated a crash with injury, and that meant that I wasn't a good rider, and that made me feel more down on myself. So, I went out one day by myself, knocked back a couple of 22oz. PBR's, mellowed out a bit to where the nerves weren't such a factor, and then just said "F*ck it......if I crash, I crash----so what? Who cares? It's OK to crash....just don't stick out your stupid hand and just roll with it." LOng story short----I crashed a few times that day, and after the first one, I got up, realized I wasn't hurt, and said "Hey...that wasn't so bad. Let's do it again!!!"
