Well my Turvativ cranks never fail to dissapoint. I got my Hussefelts a while back and yanked the pedal threads out a while back. A warranty for sure. Truvativ sent me out another pair of newer Hussefelts with a steel pedal thread insert.

I'm thinking these would last for a while right? Wrong, the spider had a wobble in the first week. But that wasn't a big deal. This week when changing pedals, the steel pedal thread insert backed out of the crank arm with the pedal! :mumble: Gah! WTF!

So I'll warranty them again, but I have lost all faith in this craptastic product. :stosh:

Ahh, I feel better after venting. But now I need new cranks... saints maybe ;)

Hussefelts are softer aluminum than Holzfellers. Something to think about. You can save them with a t-bolt if it's the right side. I've never seen any reverse threaded ones though. Grease them spindles and don't tighten them so much boy!!

Uh oh, I think my pedals my have siezed in my hussefelts, explaining their unwillingness to leave the cranks. Great. Time to start saving for new cranks, who knows if I can get the pedals out without f**king the inserts.

Put a little Loc-Tite on the insert, put em back in, let em sit overnight and the pedal should come out for ya. It did for me anyway. It happened on both sides.

Dammit Noah, what'd you have to go and do something stupid like that for? Looks like it's time for some Holzfellers.

We haf this happen to a ton of bikes when Truvativ first started putting those inserts in. It makes me wonder, why not have the insert thread in from the back or be reverse thread? Or better yet, stop making cranks out of butter!

does anyone read torque specs anymore????

pedals should be snug, NOT cranked on. it's no wonder people are having insert problems.....

hell, i use one set of pedals for both of my main bikes right now and swap them almost daily. been doing so for over 3 months, never a single stripping or thread insert problem

reminds me of the asshats who broke their 888 claiming marzocchis' fault....

yea like the guys said there is no problem in that the insert comes out, just loctite it with red and wait, you can always torch it loose afterwards.

If it was a reverse thread, just think of what would happen as soon as you tried to tighten the pedals up... having the insert thread in from the back would have either that problem, or another one which I cbf describing.

Pedal into crank:
Shimano: 307in-lb minimum
Campagnolo: 354in-lb
Ritchey: 307in-lb
Truvativ: 276-300in-lb

I guess nobody does read torque specs anymore....cuz 300in-lbs actually is "cranked on".
(Snug is about 50-100 in-lb, btw)

alright, i'm an idiot....

but i'm an idiot who has never had thread insert problems after 50+ pedal changes on the same crankset......
Hmmmm there may be something to idiocy. I have changed the pedals on my hussefelts a total of once, used a torque wrench to spec, and now it is stripped. Bah.

I think it has more to due with Truvativ substituting butter for aluminum.

What cranks, Hussfelts?
Those are pretty much the only cranks I ever hear about stripping/bending the pedal inserts on a regular basis (though they are also great at bending, tweeking, and deforming). :oink: They must be making huge profit on something returned so frequently...or they expect to get people like me and all my friends who just quit sending them in and buy something not made out of recycled beer cans.

like i said, pedals only need to be good and snug, no need to hamfist them....
Good and snug is actually the torque spec I personally use on pedals.
Who ever has had their pedals unthread on them, anyhow?
~100 in-lb is plenty if you check your gear often.

I know plenty of people (at least 10) who have had a pedal come loose and strip out their crank arm. In fact one girl I know had that exact thing happen during a ride, so she was riding the good pedal (like a scooter) down the trail and she actually tipped over and rolled down a small hill and off a 60' cliff. She lived but ended up with a stick lodged in her head, a concussion and multiple contusions and abrasions. Oh yeah and she pretty much gave up on riding...

Granted that was not only worst case scenario but also questionable judgment. I still think it is a decent example of what can happen if your pedals aren't tight enough.
