I ran my first marathon this past weekend.

It was the Marine Corps Marathon in Washington DC on Sunday.
34,000 runners.
I don't know how many spectators. I'm gonna guess lots.

The crowd was absolutely great. Lots of signs, lots of energy, plenty of bands to keep the runners entertained. Some people were giving us food (baby ruths and pretzels). Some were passing out vaseline.
The weather was perfect (mid 50's, sunny, light breeze).

Somebody did die.... which is appropriate, because the first Marathon guy (named Marathon...who would have guessed) died after he ran 26.2 miles.

At miles 22 and 24, I drank beer (thank you, hashers).

I finished with a time of 5:19 (not record setting....).
I have a medal.

I still hurt.

I will post pics.

Congrats! that pain will be with you for a few days. you should try and do something light... no impact like riding to get the blood flowing and move some of the lactic acid out.

damn, awesome job & thats a crazy amount of people racing

what did the person die of?
Heart attack at about mile 17. Another person had a heart attack at the starting line and was surround by the cheif heart surgeon at Georgetown, an EMT, and a resident doctor. he lived... and the doctor rode to the hospital with him in the ambulance, got back to the race and still ran:happydance:

First off, Congrats!
I know what kind of training you have to do to finish a marathon.
34,000 people is a ton.
I am just wondering if all the people made it harder?
When I ran that 10K Cooper River Bridge Run, there was like 33,000 people and I felt like I was running sideways more than foward half the time. It barely even got spread out by the finish.

It was pretty packed in the beginning, but there was a pretty demanding hill at mile 2, so that thinned out the pack...

and towards the end, it looked like we were just survivors of a plane crash.... all hobbling and just trying to survive!

The course did finish on a hill, but there were so many cheering people there that they just carried us through it. I was concentrating on finishing the dmn thing, I almost didn't hear or see OMGF.

Jeez...I'd love to say I did that just once, but even when I ran every single weekday morning(a few years back), it was only for 35 minutes or so. I imagine that the sense of accomplishment will help you get through the resulting pain, however. Hell, it's been some time since I've biked a distance like that all at once!

Chafing and bloody nips are teh suck. This isn't as much a problem for women, thanks to bras, as it is for men. I use band-aids for the nips, and bodyglide for other areas.
No sh!t! I had that happen a couple of times this summer on really long runs. I will sweat off band-aids in 5 or 6 miles, so I use a layer of New Skin under that.

Congrats... that's quite an accomplishment.

It's amazing that 34,000 people run that and there is still a waiting list to get signed up.

I know lots of guys (myself included) who got screwed out of running it because spots were filled up too fast.
The DAY of signup, I went to lunch and was seriously worried that it was going to fill up during lunch.... I signed up as soon as I got back (It had only been open an hour).

then I realized the torture that I was in for.

You have to sign up as soon as it opens. Set a reminder. Mark it on your calendar. Or just hope someone gets injured during training and you can take their number.

I told OMGF that I had signed up and all he said was

"Have Fun.
Good Luck.
Don't Die."

I kinda want to put that on a T-shirt.
