marzocchi drop off converted to Extension control?

I rode a Z1 free ride today and I have a Z1 dropoff. I think the only difference is the Extension control system. Or what they call ECC I think?

The lock out system is wondeful for hills. I was wondering if any of you Marzocchi fork/bike mechanics out there knew if the dropoff could be upgraded to the freeride system? I was wishfully hoping that there was an upgrade kit of some sort that I could add rather then being forced to buy a fork with this option if I decide I want this.

The other option I suppose is that I buy a used Z1 freeride fork, and sell the nearly brand new Z1 dropoff that I have now.

Like I said in your other thread, the ECC cartridge will run you about $110 from Marzocchi. The real difference between the Dropoff and the Freeride however is the compression damping. The dropoff cmes with SSV or SSVF which is a fairly simple ported valve. The freeride uses a shimmed cartridge system which is superior at speed and handling different types of hits. This cartridge ca also be purchased seperately, though I don't know the price. I would guess slightly more than the ECC. Together, these two cartridges will turn your fork into a Z1 FR, but you're looking at an investment of $250 or so. If all you want is the ECC, buy the cartridge upgrade. If you want your fork to feel like a Z1 FR, sell your fork and buy the Freeride.

As far as I know, the machining in the lowers and in the stanchions is different between the forks, so the cartridge won't be compatible unless you get new lowers and stanchions (read a new fork). And if you're gonna do that, get a new fork, it's easier.

whoops. I stand corrected.

I thought Zoke designed their forks so that you could always upgrade internals, as long as they were in the same line, even if they were different years (until the '03s that is)....?

Not that I know of, I don't know anybody who's successfully change the cartridge in their forks... Although it would have been nice.

Have you seen their exhorbitant pricing on parts like stanchions and cartridges?
