I can see the Onion headlines now. Maybe you Boston Monkeys can get a Kennedy to come put plastic on your windows next winter for you.

Mass. to get $177 million for weatherization

Seriously, if the money does go to help real families save money on their energy bills, right on. I suspect that most of the money will go to personal favors rewarding campaign contributors, in Mass and the other states as well.

The housing inside Boston, and the immediate suburbs (Dorchester, South Boston, Alston, Cambridge, Somerville, Brighton, Medford etc.) is shameful/ridiculous (this coming from my skewed American standards). Most homes are 70+ years old with heating systems that are criminally inefficient, and have poor insulation/construction. IMO any weatherization needs to start at the local home owners level ahead of the commercial. If that is the plan I don't know, and I doubt it.

However, I would love to see that money implemented as an incentive or rebate for homeowners and landlords (since there are sooooo many rentals) to reduce the cost of these improvements.

Why do I need to pay to keep you warm? Put on a sweatshirt.
I'll skip the part where I explain "stimulus" and go straight to: You would pay to reduce our energy usage and healthcare (medicare, medicaid) bills, and keep people in their homes (preventing default and foreclosure).

Thats right, because all the slum dog land owners in Boston are going to run right out and spend all that money to make these improvements. Your heart is in the right place, but lets look at this in the real world. Add in the unions, and this spells nothing but corruption....kinda like the entire "stimulus" package..no matter if you cheer on the elephants or the donkeys

Dude, do you seriously think they just hand out cash on street corners to anyone with a deed?

Try harder. It's not a complicated problem to make sure the money is used correctly.

Its the government, its always a complicated problem to make sure the money is used correctly.
You're right. **** your roads, your schools, your power grid, your fire department, your police force, your hospitals, your FDIC-insured savings, and every other benefit you get from the government that I'm sick of paying for because I doubt that it was distributed in the most perfect, ideal, efficient manner.

just saw this across the wire
The bill includes $5.8 million for the planning and design of a building to house a new Edward M. Kennedy Institute for the Senate. The funding may also help support an endowment for the institute.

The bill also includes $22 million to expand facilities at the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library & Museum and $5 million more for a new gateway to the Boston Harbor Islands on the Rose Kennedy Greenway, a park system in downtown Boston named after Kennedy's mother and built on land opened up by the Big Dig highway project.

Pork is the ultimate political diversion, it gets fiscal conservatives with no perspective frothing at the mouth, and it redirects public attention from the more pressing issues of military failure, joblessness, health care induced bankruptcies, etc.

the main problem with earmarks/pork in the fed stimulus pkg is the fact that it's "so urgent", there should not be anything in this pkg but just what's necessary - it's so friggin' huge. but don't take my word for it: obama vowed to go "line by line" before this opportunity to not waste a crisis came about

never thought i'd link this, but check out the puffington host's take on it.
Have earmarks been consistently condemned by leaders of both parties, including their presidential candidates? Yes! Have earmarks raised the ire of the media and become almost a breaking story of scandal when reported on? Absolutely! And has attacking earmarks become a sure way to win applause or approval by candidates seeking office and citizens' groups needing to build a base of support? You bet! And did President Obama renege on his promise to ban all earmarks and go line by line to eliminate them? Yes he did! So what!
you know what an earmark is
and you know the right time for one (almost never)
now is certainly not the time to swindle the american people, lest we have spending that looks like massachusetts'

Just because it's a minuscule portion of spending makes it OK to waste money? That's like dismissing cancer cells cause they're only a small fraction of the total cells in your body. You're right, it's not important.

Until it affects you...

Really????

It must piss you off that say a car engine or a gas heater isn't 100% efficient eh?

The funny thing is that one of those earmarks could very well be put towards building a cancer research center in your state. But no, no, earmarks are BAD with a capital B.

What? Explain the engine and heater correlation. And do you have any instances of those earmarks that "could" build a needed anything to dispute the fact that earmarks are nothing more than politicians pet projects and favor paybacks that has been presented?

I feel that the government should be responsible for the absoluty basic Infrastructure for a societies needs. So the govt can have at it with the roads, fire, and police.

I am seeing first hand what govt interfierence is doing to schools. In PA, all public school students are required to take a standardized test, in return placing pressure on the school boards to put pressure on teachers. Students are now taught what to think, and not how to think. Good job on that Govt.

Do I have a "perfect solution" no, but so far, but all I have seen from the rock star in the white house was the hiring of 18 local cops in Ohio. Sure its a start, but for as much talking as he is doing, he has a hell of a lot to live up to.

So you are projecting NCLB, one of the worst monumental ****up examples of domestic government intervention and regulation from the loudest "small-government" hypocrite in recent history, onto any and every "non-essential" government program? Have you even looked at Obama's education plan? Are you familiar with his education secretary? If NCLB is your example of what not to do, you should be extremely heartened by Obama and his choices, because they wholeheartedly agree with you.

Actually, now that I think about it, I kinda like NCLB. We need to keep these kids dumber than we are, so we can keep the good paying jobs!

oh that's an easy one: just like we have a wide variety of choices in places to buy various heaters, we have a variety of choices for gov't.

unlike heaters however, just not at the same time
and congressmen aren't immediately subject to the forces of free market capitalism (which readers here should quickly recognize as categorically evil)

all better?

Why do I need to pay to keep you warm? Put on a sweatshirt.

I tryed to do my part this winter. The thermostat was set at 58° for the periods of time between 4pm and 11pm. Then we let it go down to 54° for the remainder of the hours in the day. I still had a 600 oil bill per month. Thank god oil is down to 2.5$/gal. I have no idea what i would have done when it was 4.5$ in july. Any lower and we freeze pipes when its between 0° and negative 20°F at night.

Live at about 56° all winter when its 0° and still pay 600. Oh yeah, we spent 2000 on insulation this summer. I had my snoboarding baselayers, hoodies, and fleece blankets on. It sucks.

Not saying you should pay for it, but we are trying to keep energy costs down.

naw, i live in vermont. I am pretty dumb and have no idea who that guy is. I can only see Mcain? there?

I am not whining that i need money to insulate my house, i have already been trying on my own. Just trying to let McDewber know that heating in the northern states really isn’t cheap. Yes there are more efficient ways to heat my house, but I wouldn’t see any ROI for years to come and I cant even make the initial investment.

Turns out that we're all loaded with cancer cells - we defeat most of them by ordinary metabolic processes (lots of little cancers start, get taken out by body's ordinary mechanisms). Unwad yr panties.

Your exactly right, I dont know what its like up there. Living in Northern New Hampshire for six years means nothing.

You chose to live in New England, Like I chose to move to PA. You know its going to be cold, and it going to take more energy to keep your house warm. Part of the cost of living in that area of the country. I would say the same to the person complaining about AZ being too hot. Suck it up princess

So where in my post did i whine? I stated the facts of how much its costs living in a cold climate. I am doing my own part for keeping my costs down. So this princess is doing something to get his situation better. Kinda the opposite of what you are making me out to be here. People will abuse just about anything. Hey look at our govt, financial institutions, normal people, yourself, myself. We all abuse some thing.

VT is getting 38.8million for help of winterizing buildings. Quick math, I will send you the ~0.13$ that you spent to help insulate all of Vermont. Thank you for you generous help.

And I respect you for doing it on your own, not whining, and not standing in like for a hand out. The princess was for those that are.

And you can send the check to.....
