How are wal mart bikes wheels built? Id imagine they have a big machine that does it. Does any one know what these things look like or how they work? Id imagine theyd be some crazy machine. werd
jodysbike, who no longer posts here, worked at a wheel building place. they used machines to mass produce wheels for redline/giant/trek etc. (those may not be all corect, but they did do TONS of wheels for big time bike companys)
but they also did a lot of hand truing. so the machines would tighten the spokes down, or add some tension but they'd then hand to the final product.
I forget what the machines look like, other then big ol, machines...
Man, I remember like 6-7 years ago, this one company brought one of their machines to Interbike to show it off.
HOLY CRAP!
It was a life-changing thing to see this machine build a wheel in literally seconds. I think it was probably something like 30 seconds, if not less, from parts to a complete wheel. Most of those wheels are hand-finished too.
Still, nothing beats a hand-built wheel. I like how Rocky Mountain has the signature of the person who built the wheels on each rim. Pride in your work is good.
I was going to mention Holland Mechanics as well. We talked to them last year and briefly considered one of their machines but nothing beats hand built wheels. Some of the machines out there still require hand lacing of the spokes and the wheels must be hand trued to finish them off.
