I understand that the 717 replaced the old 317. Is this correct information? There seems to be a significant price difference now. Is the 717 a big improvement over the 317 or just newer, and thus the higher price?

I think you missed the 517 in the progression for Mavic XC rims.

I have had all 3, and the 717's seem to do the same job as the other rims. I can't speak for the price, but I don't think you get anything special...
