My current tires are Kenda Blue Groove 2.5 up front and the Nevegal 2.3 rear on Mavic 823 UST rims. I'm 165lbs and ride light downhill with lots of climbing.

I like the kenda's but am thinking of switching to the Maxxis Highroller UST for rear and a HR or Minion UST for the front. Is the Minion worth the extra pound?? Can anybody tell me about the sidewall of the Minion vs the HR? Should I run stan sealant with UST tires. Most of the trails I ride are loose dirt/ gravel over hardpack and lots of rocks.

Thanks, Brad

Downhill with lots of climbing?

Anyway the Minions are great tires. They are worth the weight. I am not a big fan of the sealant but try it and see if you like. It can't hurt anything. I hae not had pinch flats on any of my Maxxis tires so I would not be concerned about the sidewall.

Those weights sound misleading. The biggest they make the HR is 2.35, right? I think the minion is bigger. Also, the make the HR in a downhill sidewall and a regular sidewall. Make sure you have weights for both. I run a dh sidewall in the back and reg in the front on my trail bike.

You can use the Maxxis rim strips with the 823s and Stans sealant with excellent results for minimal $$$$$. try it out, you can use the tires you have or any tire as far as I know and have good results with the rim strips, its a worthy investment.BTW, the strips help seal the bead on non UST tires.

im going to try the High Roller UST on 2005 mavic 823's for DH racing where there are not sharp edge rocks. that tire is listed at 740g. That should make for a pretty light wheelset.

I'll have a DH ust tire for gnarly rock garden courses.

I found the Maxxis UST tires to be VERY prone to holes. Every Maxxis UST tire I have owned has ended up with at least 20 pinholes. Stans fills them, but eventually the Stans dries up. Since switching to Michelin UST's, riding the exact same trails in the exact same conditions on the exact same bikes, I have had exactly ZERO pinholes.

Someone told me Maxxis fixed the problem, but I'm not wasting any more money on their UST tires to find out.

I do love the Minions though, in the tube versions :)

which Maxxis/Mich tires did you use? what differences in traction can you tell me? What kind of trails? Are you using stans in the Michies?

Thanks, Brad

The Maxxis were Highroller UST's, and the Michelins are Comp S UST's. I think the Maxxis tires hooked up just a little bit better when they were brand new, but faded quickly. The Michelins are maybe 90% as good new, but the traction stays consistent through the life of the tire. Used Stans in both tires. Trails are typical east coast stuff, rocks, dirt, roots, logs, mud. I don't know what caused all the pinholes in the Highrollers, but it hasn't happened to the Michelins...

Echo, were the Highrollers the DH 2.5 or 2.7 versions? I rode UST Minion DHFs, Minion DHRs, and Highrollers in 2.5s and 2.7s last year. Maybe 10% of the them had small holes that would deflate the tire in about a week with no sealant. With sealant I didn't notice a significant drop in air pressure. Granted I had protos as these weren't available, but this year's production ones are very similar and shouldn't have any trouble.

In the DH version, there shouldn't be any difference in the sidewalls between the HR and the Minion.
