May Day rally turns violent in Santa Cruz
(05-02) 19:40 PDT SANTA CRUZ -- A May Day rally in Santa Cruz erupted into chaos Saturday night when about 200 protesters, some with torches, stormed the city's main street. Some smashed windows and spray-painted anarchist graffiti, police said.

Jimi Haynes, 24, was arrested on suspicion of felony vandalism after witnesses saw him shatter two windows at a Pacific Avenue jewelry store, police said. They said Haynes, a parolee from Fresno County, had been in Santa Cruz for several weeks and had learned of the rally by picking up a flyer at a "local anarchist cafe."

The incident started after protesters at a labor rally at the town clock marched down Pacific around 10:30 p.m., police said. At least 15 businesses were vandalized. A video posted on YouTube shows several people in masks smashing windows, with some others in the crowd confronting the vandals.

Similar thing happened here...nothing like protesting capitalism and rallying for workers' rights by smashing the windows of small businesses.

About 10:45 p.m. Saturday, a group of between 20-30 people wearing dark clothing, some wearing masks and carrying backpacks, threw items, including newspaper boxes, through windows of several businesses along O. Henry Avenue. A front window of the Asheville Citizen-Times was shattered, as were multiple storefronts at the Grove Arcade. An ATM was smashed at the RBC on O. Henry.

Partyharty!

All of my friends were sending me pics of the busted up UO storefront and accompanying graffiti. Lolz.

Spoiled Community Studies majors at UCSC....sigh.

And yes, there is an "anarchist" cafe in SC. It shares a building with the bike collective. That building is like the Black Stone of Mecca for hipsters.
