some people are just really fast even on "normal" bikes. the guy who has the Mountain Lion lap record is clearly not on a DH bike given the uphill bits and all. and he's like 2 minutes faster than me (over 10-12 min) on the DH segment.

If it’s the section of the run that I am thinking of, there are two small, punchy steep climbs that are easily rideable on an ‘enduro’ bike, but would be a total bitch on a dedicated DH bike.
Or is it just the gut?

it's the first section. gut has no real uphills. at least one of those climbs would be impossible on a DH bike as it's probably 100' vert and steep.

I haven't been able to clear the first of the climbs in my last few attempts that has the super steep pitch between the two sets of tree roots. Gut has no "climbs", but there's the two rock sections that require good line choice and approach gear to get up and over.

Yes, there was probably some hyperbole in there, I have only cleaned both when the soil was stellar. And I think that was just once. ;-)

Went hard trying to beat my best time on the popular trail descent that's the closest one to home, knocked 10 seconds off my PR despite a few mistakes and bobbles. 12:54, KOM is 8:54. I know there's a couple of small climbs, but I can't comprehend going 4 minutes quicker down that run.
Have you looked at the ride that did it 4 minutes faster?

I've seen some (when I had a Strava subscription) that were clearly people who's phones either recorded the ride wrong, they cheated the system somehow or were on some other form of transportation.

Current KOM and QOM were both set on the same day 6 years ago during a race, the trail has changed since then in spots, but it's also now bike only and DH only on the entire run for certain days, so can be ridden like a hiker clear race situation.

I don't subscribe and it's only myself I compete again, so I can't check others I follow. For this DH segment my 13:54 yesterday is nothing special, @Full Trucker I think you're in the low 11's? I know the Canadian is in the 10's. @rideit and @Nick what you got? @Toshi probably only has moped times :p

I think most on here would enjoy this run, it's a rocky, techy sections here and there DH, but nothing that can't be ridden by most.

Well, I think I would fall somewhere around FT’s time (on a good day), but I don’t think I have ever done it balls out, top to bottom. I think it has always been with a group, so regrouping at the top of the second climb, at the bridge past enchanted, etc.
(FT for sure has/had a home court advantage).
The first time I ever rode it I stayed on Ian’s wheel the entire time, balls out.
But then broke three ribs almost at the end, LOL.

Slower than that I'm sure. I've never gone balls out for a time. Usually we regroup after the punchy climbs on EF, stop to fix something, etc. I always stumble on that huge janky sharp rock 'up'. I know I've never kept FT in sight on it when he still lived here.

edit: I know the girl who holds QOM, she's an absolute ripper, so let's assume I'm 40-50% slower than her. :D

The second bigger rock hump toward the bottom (shark fin on Strava segments) has gotten tougher over time, the low line to the right is now, "How much do I like my derailleur being attached". My current line is high left up across the rock slope, but I bobbled it yesterday and lost a few seconds. Most of the rest of that run is just comfort at mach chicken through the rocks where skill versus not crashing in a bloody heap comes into how fast do you want to go.

I can flow pretty well down EF and the Gut, it's the two heart-exploding bits on Enchanted that usually recover after, killing any chance of a fast total time.

It's a good thing I don't care about that stuff!

Nor do I normally, but given current situation on future riding I've been trying to tick off PR's on some of my favourite on and off road climbs and descents lately - my previous for that Apex run was from 2017 and finished at Mtn Toad, so I know it involved others going fast, versus my normal riding :D

You know, I never got a chance to do an uninterrupted top to bottom run. Always some stupid runner going up the gut.

Yeah, a PR that was set on Wednesday, May 26, 2021. You were also on that ride... it appears that I (we?) did three (3) shuttled laps of Apex on that day. My fastest being lap 2. A little Strava spelunking suggests that someone named "Mike" was also there, and he nearly broke his foot on a rock. Guessing that's @Nick's friend Mike? @Pesqueeb what day did you take delivery of your GG? Because I titled one of those laps "Fruit Smash!" A reference to your new bike, mayhaps? The plot thickens!

Was that where we discussed the lack of compression in #5 and his need for a new block soon? :D

How's the truck fairing 3 years later @SkaredShtles ?

Downhill and bike only on even days for enchanted and the gut below enchanted for a while now. Occasional hikers who can't read big signs on swing gates though.
