I have more and more friends using Skype but still have some that only use Messenger. I would like to just use one application and I remember reading about Miranda or Trilian. Anybody have any recommendations and experience?

I have been using meebo for a long time. Before that, I used older versions of Trillian and Miranda.

I remember Miranda being a bit finicky. It was good if you were comfy around computers and such but not super user friendly (keep in mind this is more than a year ago so things may have changed).

I won't mention Trillian b/c it has been like 3+ years since I used it.

I currently like meebo quite a bit. Online based so nothing to download. Not 100% compatible with the file transfers and web cams and such but more than sufficient for chatting purposes. And I can access all of my IM accounts through one central meebo account.

Good luck

I use Pidgin. All I ever do is talk to people so I have no idea about file transfer/video/voice/whatever functionality, but it does all of the major clients.

Gaim/Pidgin is probably the best option. I haven't used Trillian in years.

Also if you are on corporate network with a firewall you can bypass their web and IM filters easily with Tor. Tor has a zero install bundle (for USB drives etc) for Windows that includes Firefox and Pidgin IM client:

I use trillian and it works well, except for file transfers..1 file at a time. If I need a transfer a whoel folder, just use aim (which I only use for this).
