Mix-n-match rotors and calipers?

Within limits, how easy is it mix-and-match between rotors and calipers between systems?

Specifically, I have a set of "Hayes-specific" hubs -- and I'm sure Hayes are great brakes -- but if I decide it's time to get some fancy new Hopes, (or Avids, or Maguras ...), is there any chance of using a Hayes rotor with the new caliper, so I don't have to chuck the hubs.

Are there any combinations known to work?

Are there any combos that will simply not work?

I've seen Hayes rotors used with XT discs and '02 Avids (won't work with '01 and earlier 165mm Avids). I can't speak for Hope but if they take 160mm rotors, it should be fine.

I have mixed and matched many a rotor in my day and it's fine so long as they're within 1 or 2mm difference.

some will and some won't. certain companies mill their rotors down to a specific size to fit w/ in a certain tolerance that they make w/ in the calipers. i know for certain a hayes rotor will not work w/ maraga's(sp?) calipers. lol i went and looked at your bikes and i KNEW just from looking at your bike that you were from boston. didn't have to read annnnnnny of the description. y'all just set up your commuter bikes totally different from everyone else. it's a sweet set up and makes HELLA sense. and man how can you live in somerville and not get an IF???

I run an older Avid rotor with a Hayes caliper on my M1. I just had to mess with the shims a little. At the time I couldn't find any of my Hayes rotors, but of course after I got it set up I found like 3 :D But I haven't gotten around to switching it back because it works fine...

Yah. You caught me. Spend enough time in Slummerville and you get caught in the cult of Fat City. Seven or IF? IF or Seven?

On the other hand, it's nice to visit the factory and watch them building your frame...

I have Magura Julia disk brakes and on my new wheelset i'm about to use XT rotors cause i'm to cheap to buy the Magura ones. My LBS says they will work you just might lose some stopping power because they have less braking surface.

Huh. So a Hayes rotor will work with an XT caliper, and an XT rotor will work with a Magura caliper,

But a Hayes rotor won't work with a Magura caliper?

I guess it's just a 'try it til it works' question.

not necessarly, the xt rotors are a tab bit thicker i think the the hayes or magura so i'm not all that sure that the xt rotor will work for a magura caliper.

I know some guys using xt rotors with Hayes calipers. But I look at them and the xt has a less deep surface but with small holes so maybe the swept area is similar? But the braking surface on the xt looks as though its much less deep/thick. Then the brake pad is running partly on the "spokes" of the rotor. Will this create differential wear and cause the pads to wear out prematurely?

I got my new wheels today and an XT rear rotor for my magura brakes.
We mesured it and it's a few hundreds of a MM thiner than the magura disk. It took awhile to get the caliper in the right position because the hub is different.
In the end the XT rotor works better with my Julies it doesn't make this horrible noise and it doesn't vibrate my ass anymore.
