i unpacked, set up, and calibrated the LP2475W today.

:thumb:

first impressions:
- text appears about as crisp as it did on my prior Dell 2405FPW
- backlighting appears even even when moving ones' head around, and certainly not an issue when in front of the monitor
- calibration is a MUST. the default settings were pretty bad, color temp 5500, really bright, somewhat middling contrast (due to the calibration, not the panel), and the balance way off. i ended up with RGB 220 212 255 iirc for a balanced 6500K whitepoint and let the i1 do its magic for adjusting the rest of the gamut to match.

Towing the party line.
My Gateway has decided to go kaput. It has no range and no brightness left. Calibrator proved it. It is going to be relegated to TV in my shop.

I Just ordered up the HP Toshi and Syadasti mentioned. Turns out what i really want is not yet affordable, so another interim display it is.

What do you think of the Dell UltraSharp 2707WFP?
http://management.cadalyst.com/cadman/article/articleDetail.jsp?id=441586

You can get them for $500 on the dell site.

edit: found a review... http://reviews.cnet.com/lcd-monitors/dell-2707wfp-27-inch/4505-3174_7-32306445.html
keep in mind that 27" panels have no more resolution than the 24"s iirc. the Dell higher-end series (WFP, not the cheap line!) is a decent panel -- i liked my 2405WFP back in the day. from all i've read, however, the HP that i ended up with is the preferable display in terms of color accuracy, latency, and contrast. the only thing i miss about the Dell is the built-in card reader. the HP still has a bunch of inputs and USB ports.

Good point. I'll go with that hp when I can. What's the width of the screen?
it's 24" diagonal, so that's the hypotenuse, if you will. the aspect ratio is 1920 laterally by 1200 vertically assuming square pixels, so the angle of our triangle is the inverse tangent (arctan) of 1200/1920, or 0.558599315 radians per google calculator.

so what's the width? the cosine of 0.558599315 radians is the adjacent side over the hypotenuse, or the width over 24" per our construction. therefore:

width = 24" * cos (0.558599315 rad) =~ 20.35" inches per google calculator.

:D

the easier way would be to google for specs, and they seem to agree with me.

Have you seen any portable stands that would work for the hp? I'm thinking of traveling with it, but the stand is huge.

Most monitors are 100x100mm vesa compatible - I am pretty sure the HP is but I haven't checked mine.

haha ...I had to look that one up.

If I go to whistler for 2-3 weeks, I want to be able to edit photos on a good monitor with my laptop, without hoping they look right. It would fit in a pelican case better than my 21" Trinitron...

The original box works fine. My LP2475W has been setup in three locations and has around 2000 miles on it:D

I was happy with my prior display, which was a 24" Dell IPS job albeit with a different model number. 2405FPW was the one. Given that this one is about $120 cheaper but looks similar otherwise, I'd say go for it. :thumb:

With regard to speakers, I looked briefly at the market a few months ago and ended up going with some $30 Logitechs since I figured that the source material and room layout didn't really merit anything nicer. "Logitech S220 2.1 Speaker System with Subwoofer." Not great. Not too horrible. Better than laptop-size speakers, for sure.

Hellafornia. Formerly stumptown.
I bought a hp 2511x (LED display if I remember correctly) to become my main monitor to and my older dell 19" is going to secondary duty.

I've been happy with color/brightness of the monitor. IT's not $2000 monitor color accurate but I can be pretty close on the output side color wise with it.

Looks like the deal is dead. Nice price, though.

edit: I wonder if Dell still has the stupid design where the USB ports turn off when you power down the monitor?
